76 | T T Richard Loader Renovations a passion for builder Staggered bricks and cedar cladding are a feature of Brook Carr’s family home in Cromwell. Brook Carr Building BUILDING Brook Carr had been building for about thirteen years when he decided the time was right to realise his dream of owning and operating his own business. That was seven years ago and Brook Carr Building has continued to grow, with a particular focus on residential new builds and renovation work. Based in Cromwell, there is a pretty even split between the new builds and renovation work, but Brook says from the renovation side his passion is going in with the right skills and knowledge, breathing new life into old buildings, and the customer getting a good outcome. “We do like the renovation projects. There’s a lot of organisation that goes into a renovation and they are more challenging, because you never know what you are going to find till you get into it,” says Brook. “We found that when we started in Cromwell, there was quite an opening in the renovation market, picking up job after job through word of mouth,” he says. “Central Otago was, and still is, going through a massive building boom, and for people who were wanting major renovations, new kitchens, bathrooms and extensions they couldn’t get a builder. So we always try to keep some availability so that we’re not turning those people away. “The clients tend to be really happy that they have found a builder they can work with to transform their dream to reality. We worked for a couple in Loburn for few years who were restoring a 150-year-old villa that was brought down from Christchurch in six pieces. We also built a big American style horse barn for them too.” By contrast, Brook feels the new builds generally provide work that is less challenging, but still require the same attention to detail and craftsmanship. Showcasing the level craftsmanship provided by his team, Brook references his own family home completed in Cromwell a couple of years ago. The home is a four-bedroom 315 sqm single storey home clad in brick, and off-set with cedar weatherboards. “I designed the brick pattern myself, because I wanted something just a bit different. So the pattern is staggard, the bricks step in and out and have been painted white, which blends well with the natural cedar weatherboards. Our floorplan design includes two lounges and open plan kitchen / dining, deck and outdoor fire. There’s a pitched ceiling in the main living room, and the ceilings and doors throughout the house are extra high, giving the home a sense of space. The interior includes polished concrete floors, contrasting with a nice black kitchen and black stone benchtop, with some American Oak timber features. There are lots of lovely finishing touches everywhere including hidden cedar timber doors in the entrance way — they are one of my favourite features. Everything in the home has been slightly upgraded, to make it just a little bit special.” Complementing the residential projects, Brook Carr Building also undertakes a number of commercial projects and is currently doing a very large commercial renovation for The Gate, a large accommodation/restaurant complex in Cromwell.
