This outstanding North Canterbury home made the Top 100 in the 2022 Master Builders’ House of the Year as well as being awarded a regional gold and the Sustainable and Environmental Excellence Award at the Canterbury Master Builders Awards. The Gate House project epitomizes the ongoing swing towards more sustainable living and the greater design effort being put into renewable energy and improved energy efficiency. Brendan welcomes this growing focus on sustainability and healthier home standards, knowing that what is built today will also house future generations to come. “All the projects we have been involved with have been designed using sustainable orientation to maximise the natural use of light and heat sources, built using quality products that last and insulated over the minimum standards. Some of our recent projects have been built for off-grid living ability using services such as filtration, rainwater retention, solar power, and eco-friendly wastewater and drainage systems.” One such project for the team involved a boat-access-only architectural build in the Marlborough Sounds that entailed precise planning, effective communication, various unconventional construction methods and clever energy efficient sustainable construction solutions. The home was designed to operate off-grid, relying solely on renewable energy solutions. ‘Exceptional’ best describes this idyllic family holiday home in the Sounds.
