BUILDING Agger Homes Experience working on mansions in the United Kingdom, to building modest apartments in Queenstown has provided Karlo Aggerholm with a solid foundation to develop Agger homes. Karlo established the business in 2009 after starting in the industry in 2001, subsequently working in the United Kingdom on luxury residential builds in which home cinemas, swimming pools and lifts were the norm among wealthy homeowners. “I cut my teeth on a couple of mansions over there, which was quite cool; that got me really interested in it. They would have cost many, many millions of dollars to build.” “There was a lot of learning about oldschool building methods. I got to work with a lot of the bricklayers and plasterers doing a lot of things you wouldn’t normally get to do in New Zealand. The knowledge they had was immense. It was a real privilege.” As well as gaining high-end residential experience, Karlo set himself up to be equally skilled in commercial projects by working on various commercial sites throughout London. While his decision to start the business in Queenstown in 2009 when the global financial crisis hit may seem mistimed, it was prompted by few employment options and the general lack of job security at the time, so he felt he had nothing to lose. “I backed myself and thought I will have a go. It was really good; I got to learn so much more running the business than if I was a chippie on the tools. It was a baptism by fire which was actually really good.” As the business grew in reputation and staff, Agger Homes became involved as a subcontractor in iconic commercial projects such as iFLY, Remarkables ski area base building, Pak N Save and Mitre 10 Mega as well as many residential projects. The company has a vision to create warm, health and efficient architecturally designed homes for current and future generations to enjoy and is committed to bringing the latest building techniques to the Queenstown region. As well as building high end homes, it is also contributing to alleviating Queenstown’s accommodation shortage. A recent project involved the construction of four architecturally designed units for a property developer, in collaboration with a project management, company in Fernhill. It was satisfying to get the referral, Karlo says. “It’s nice to have that appreciation that someone thinks you’re good at what you do.” “It was a two unit house that was effectively four separate units, with really stunning views. It was a pile house on a mountainside, so it was a fairly difficult build with a tight time frame, but we delivered for the client. Part of the project involved building an eight metre high retaining wall which formed the units’ carports. Another build that came from a word of mouth referral was a 220 square metre two level home in Arrowtown with a garage and storage under. It comprises four bedrooms, two bathrooms and open plan living with a scissor truss ceiling in the lounge/kitchen dining area. A large deck area on the second level overlooks the Hills golf course and provides vistas of the mountains beyond.
