T T Richard Loader Anthony Bown, is the owner/operator for the Port Hills franchise of Smith & Sons, home renovation specialists. He is a very practical person; a winning quality for someone passionate about creating the beautiful spaces that his clients call home. Amongst other things, Anthony was a chef in a past life, but 18 years ago decided he wanted a change of direction, completed his building apprenticeship and became a Licenced Building Practitioner. “When I was cooking, I would build something and it would be demolished in under ten minutes, whereas with building a home you get to appreciate the finished product for a much longer period of time. Building celebrated my creative side as well as my ability to fix things — that’s why I’m a renovator.” Anthony had been at the tail end of the EQC initial response work when in 2012 the opportunity arose to become a Smith & Sons franchise partner, and take advantage of the considerable value and support provided by the franchisor. Based at the bottom of Christchurch’s Cashmere Hills, the Port Hills franchise covers an area from Kennedy’s Bush through to Godley Head, with projects also undertaken throughout the broader Canterbury region. Smith & Sons has a unique and simple 3-step process of Design, Plan and Construct, which is particularly well suited for larger projects requiring building consent. The business prides itself on is its ability to forecast build costings, and delivering plans and a completed build that suit both the clients’ desires and their budget. “Our offering to the market is come to us, work with us collaboratively to get to the end of your journey and the outcome you are driving for. Quite often we receive architectural renovation plans that have already been consented, and after costing them, it becomes clear that the architect’s dream home is outside the client’s budget. We try to become involved in the project at the early conceptual stage and work with the architect and the client to deliver a unified product that is more cost considered to ensure we meet the clients budget, and is also time considered — especially if a client is having to stay in alternative accommodation.” While not all of Smith & Sons’ projects are large in scale, and might be as simple as running repairs, fixing a roof leak, or making over a bathroom or kitchen, it is those large scale renovations where Anthony and his team really shine. “We have to respect the existing structure both in design and styling and bring it into the modern world to meet the current building code, both structurally and thermally. We tend to weave buildings back together, because they’re not always perfect, and that’s a lot more complex than just standing frames on a slab. “Through previous projects I have a huge volume of imbedded knowledge, which allows me to develop a project methodology, enabling me to bring solutions to the table that many won’t see. “For me, it’s also understanding the experience the client needs from us and from the building, so that at the end of the project they feel they’ve had really good value for money and an outstanding result.” Anthony and his team are currently completing an $850,000 full rebuild of a house in the Cashmere Hills. “That project involves the removal of all roof and ceiling trusses, and all the walls, excavation under the house to build a new standalone apartment, and replacement of two thirds of the floor planking. “The walls will be rebuilt, insulated, reclad, and rewired. A new hydraulic water system will be supplied, along with drainage, new roof, windows and doors. I’m a hill-build specialist, and have the capacity to solve very complex site related problems, cost effectively. I love to see a great result and a client who is super-duper happy with the home renovation.
