98 | Focus on sustainability Misco uses seamless laser edging on its MDF doors, panels and carcasses as standard, which means no glue line. JOINERY MIsco T T Karen Phelps Misco continues on a growth trajectory and business is expected to increase 10-15% in the financial year from a combination of new clients and efficiencies in the Christchurch factory operation, says general manager Penny Abell. The company moved into its purpose built fully automated 3500sqm factory in Kaiapoi in 2017 complete with show room and offices marking a significant milestone for Misco. Starting with two CNC machines and two edgebanders, in the past 12 months a faster CNC machine and another edgebander have been added to the plant to keep up with demand. In addition Misco has grown the commercial client base significantly, particularly catering to rest home, kindergarten and medium density housing projects throughout New Zealand. The factory is also reflective of Misco’s focus on sustainability with 530 solar panels on the roof to reduce their carbon footprint. In addition all of the paper in the office is recycled and the dust resulting from cutting MDF is all recycled into mulch and landscaping for a local landscaping company. The facility also has an EV point for people to charge their vehicles. Over the next six months there are plans to revamp the showroom with new kitchens to showcase the latest product, says Penny. “People can see seven kitchen layouts showing different colours, products and styles, a walk in pantry, two walk in wardrobes, two laundries and living room cabinetry,” she says. Penny says Misco has established a firm reputation for quality product and prides taking a collaborative approach, working closely with clients to meet their needs. A few key points of difference are that Misco uses seamless laser edging on its MDF doors, panels and carcasses as standard, which means no glue line. Its European soft-close drawers and hinges are manufactured by Grass – the best in the market, - and come with a lifetime warranty. Misco’s responsive and proactive attitude along with a focus on building lasting relationships that has seen it work for many clients repeatedly as well as attracting new clients to its offering. “We have the capability to meet our clients’ needs and deliver to their specifications every time, always placing high importance on quality,” she says. Misco Joinery was founded in 1988 by Michael Chernishoff and is today run by Michael and brother-in-law Glenn Colenso who joined the company as a junior Joiner in 1998. Today Misco has a team of around 65 and maintains its core family oriented beliefs of determination and teamwork. The Misco process begins with a site visit and/or examination of floor plans to determine client requirements. Misco then delivers an initial design to help the client visualise the potential of their space. A design consultation in the company’s extensive showroom follows with one of Misco’s experienced designers where the design is tailored further. From corner solutions to bin systems Misco can provide endless European quality upgrade options. Once the design is finalised it is then manufactured and installed by the Misco team resulting in a seamless service. All joinery is produced in the Kaiapoi manufacturing facility giving good control over quality and timing of projects to meet clients’ deadlines. “Misco offers a strong team of client-facing designers who are all passionate about creating the perfect spaces,” says Penny. “We are focused on delivering to our clients’ budgets and expectations every time.” Laminex New Zealand® offers trusted surface solutions such as Melteca® in a wide range of decors and finishes - ideal for cabinetry and furniture in residential and commercial applications.
