T T Kim Newth Responding to rapid, ongoing population growth in Rolleston, Hope Presbyterian has recently opened a purpose-built new church to meet the needs of the growing community. Designed by Dalman Architects, the new landmark church on Springston Road features white brick and metal cladding systems separated by a glazed central foyer that provides access from two directions. Along with a large worship auditorium for over 400 people, the striking building includes multi-use lounge spaces, offices and a kitchen. Bushnell Builders completed the construction on site to deliver the impressive design. “The architectural design of the exterior - with the large curves, zig zag elevations and tiered roofing heights – made this a unique construction challenge,” observes Brad Austin, director of Bushnell Builders. The large foyer has two entrances, one at the eastern end and the other at the western end, both fully glazed. This welcoming space is central to the building’s aesthetics, linking the architectural forms on either side. “There were many challenges to ensure the area flowed through internally and externally, such as matching the timber grain ceiling panels from inside to outside and forming the oculus in the back elevation soffit. These details are very challenging, but step by step we worked through the details with Dalman Architects and the end result is spectacular.” Throughout the construction process, Brad and the Bushnell team were very mindful of Hope Presbyterian’s expectations, particularly around having the building operational by a particular date. “We were proud to meet that target.” From the street, the simple yet striking architectural forms create a strong presence, yet this is also a highly functional building. From aesthetics to acoustics, this new church has been carefully designed and built to meet the needs of a modern congregation and is fully equipped with the latest audio-visual technology. For Brad, the aspect that he’s most proud of is the manner in which this whole project was completed. He says it was a positive experience from start to finish. Acknowledging the management team, Brad thanked Dalman Architects for in depth detailing and clear plans; Rangzen Pro for clear and in control management of the project; and Shaun Stockman for clear and precise expectations, informed by his considerable construction knowledge. “It was an enjoyable process throughout, where you would look forward to site meetings with the consultants and clients.” Bushnell Builders are experienced Registered Master Builders with a long track record of success in construction.
