BUILDING A good residential renovation can be as beneficial as a new house, says mid-Canterbury licensed builder Paul Cartney, owner of Smith & Sons Ashburton. This top-tier design and build home renovation specialist company transforms living spaces throughout mid-Canterbury, from the Rakaia to the Rangitata Rivers. Smith & Sons Ashburton is a locally owned and operated, award-winning build company and part of a nationwide franchise of 28 - providing full design and build services across the board for the residential and light commercial sector. Paul and his wife Anna lead a team of eight, made up of four licensed builders, two apprentices, a project manager and an estimator from their Allenton premises offering a second-to-none renovation and new build service framed by extensive local knowledge and well-established working relationships with local sub-trades. Specialising in kitchen and bathroom renovations, Smith & Sons Ashburton handles every aspect of any project, making the renovation experience smoother and easier. “A lot of our core business is kitchen and bathroom renovations, but we have the capability and the experience to complete any building project,” says Paul. “From an architectural new home to a conversion, extension, or addition to any age house – we can project manage the whole thing, obtain consents required, and get it built within the required budget and timeframe.” So committed to making the client’s build experience a pleasant one, Paul has even built a bathroom trailer – a mobile, substitute bathroom facility delivered to site for homeowners to use throughout their bathroom renovation. “It results in less interruption to their life while we’re renovating. Particularly if you only have one bathroom or perhaps, you’re a landlord so you’re required to provide those facilities. The bathroom trailer means you don’t have to ship your occupants out and put them up in alternate accommodation, you just park this up the drive and you’ve got a full ensuite,” says Paul. Going above and beyond is standard for Paul who has 34 years in the building trade, 15 of them as Cartney Construction trading as Smith & Sons Ashburton. Mid-Canterbury born and bred, Paul completed his apprenticeship in Rakaia and in his time has successfully completed a diverse range of build projects throughout the region: urban or rural, commercial or educational. “We’ve done renovations, rebuilds and remodels of all kinds of homes from urban family homes to farmhouses to holiday homes – interior and exterior, landscaping and hardscapes – we can sort it all.” Smith & Sons Ashburton are an award-winning business, having collected numerous franchise awards and a category win in the Master Builders House of the Year for mid and south Canterbury in 2016. This 64 sq. metre under-utilised storage space was turned into a light-filled one-bedroom, one-bathroom living space beautifully finished with a white interior complete with a kitchenette, pull-out pantry, drawers and corner storage units. A bathroom ensuite with a tiled shower and bedroom partition for added privacy completes the interior, while a bay window and large glass slider add indoor-outdoor flow onto a private courtyard. The same project won the Master Builders Gold Reserve Award for a Renovation of up to $250,000. Proudly supporting Smith & Sons Ashburton l i i 0274 747 622 prenderplumb@xtra.co.nz l . .
