The house, which will come on the market shortly with a price tag of around $2.7 million, has a footprint of 310m2 comprising four bedrooms and two living rooms. “It’s a stunning site with some of the best views the Port Hills have to offer,” says Westside Buildings’ Michael Connell, who owns the company in partnership with wife Lisa. “We’ll be marketing it ourselves because we’ve had good results from doing so in the past, and while clients like to meet the people who built their new home, we also like to meet the families that will live in them.” Michael started his building career in the mountain town of Methven, Mid-Canterbury, 20 years ago at the age of 17, completing his apprenticeship with Snowfed Builders four years later. Westside Building currently has a staff of four comprising two other trade-qualified builders and an apprentice along with Michael, while Lisa not only looks after the books – and the couple’s three children - but has a key role in the interior designs of the company’s projects. Most of these are for upmarket bespoke homes, though the Redcliffs house is on land Michael and Lisa bought a couple of years ago along with an existing design, subsequently modified by Christchurch firm Threefold Architecture with whom Westside Builders has an ongoing relationship. “We’re prepared to take on any projects, renovations and extensions among them, but most of our work is one-off bespoke homes, with a lot of them being built on the Port Hills,” Michael says. The company has plenty of work lined up, but Michael says it’s felt the impact of the hopefully fading recession in the industry. In a recent transformation, Paul and the team completed a large-scale renovation of a Smithfield Road family home in Ashburton. The 1970s-era split-stone clad house was extended out three sides, re-roofed and reclad in modern brick. “We put in an ensuite and walk-in wardrobe and extended the lounge and put on an attached garage, so it was a major reno that turned out really well,” says Paul. From concept to completion Smith & Sons Ashburton provide a sterling and stress-free build experience backed by the clout of a nationwide network. ;ô¾ ¾äÙ¬¾ Ý©éÙäËÅ aŜ Ĕė ėĔĜ ĖĕĔĚ Ŝ Ý©éÙäËÅư¾ô¾¾äÙ¬¾ŚÅĀ rŜ Ý©éÙäËÅŚ¾ô¾¾äÙ¬¾ŚÅĀ STANDOUT TRADE SERVICES New Zealand’s leading and largest supplier of building materials and hardware.
