COMMUNITY age once a week throughout the year. “There’s always something going on here.” Management are keen to see Harness Racing New Zealand create strategic training centres across the country, which Ashburton Raceway would be a perfect fit. There are 65 harness horses and 20 thoroughbred horses stabled on course and trained here at the raceway, and an extra barn is in the process of being constructed to allow for increased capacity. “We can probably cater for another 20 to 30 harness horses here, which would be nice. “Hopefully a few more look to come and train from here and we can add further barns to our infrastructure.” “The key is to put the money back into the facilities so everyone can have a more enjoyable time when visiting Ashburton Raceway”. These sites are not only durable and built to last, they will exceed environmental and building standards whilst being extremely functional and highly presentable. For 35 years, Fulton Hogan Ashburton has been a leader in roading and civil construction in the Ashburton district. The firm specialises in roading and civil construction, but can turn its hand to anything, including maintaining the Ashburton Raceway’s harness racing track surface. Each year, it replaces the track with a washed sand layer to ensure racing events can be held in all weather. “It’s a special product that we’ve devised for the Ashburton racecourse, so they know that they’re getting the same product each time and its applied to precise depths under the watchfull eye of track specialist John Denton who manages the track at Addington Raceway in Christchurch” branch manager Darcey Roberts said. It was always great to be working with the raceway as they continually strive to improve the tracks surface, shape and ultimate pace, he said. “We have a strong and long-standing relationship through constructing and maintain the track surface with specialised materials specially designed and supplied locally to give the Ashburton raceway the edge. “There’s a lot of training coming to Ashburton, and the existing surface comes under pressure year round, so it no longer lasts more than a year.” It was fantastic to be a part of ensuring the raceway’s success, he said. “If an iconic Ashburton Institution like the Ashburton Raceway can be successful in attracting and holding major sporting events, along with providing the additional opportunities for trainers to have access to the best facilities, then the future is bright and we are proud to be a part of their success story.” Maintaining the racetrack was not too different from the roading projects the firm undertook, he said. “It suits us because is similar to building a road, and that’s why we quite like it because that’s our specialty.” They have also completed work at Phar Lap Raceway at Timaru and the Oxford racecourses. Another exciting recent project completed by the firm has been the $18m development of the new Fairfield Freight Hub in Ashburton – a 30,000sqm project that hopes to streamline and grow with freight volumes in and out of the region, reducing the impact of trucks on the road. The project, hailed as a “game-changer” for the district, started in June 2023 and was operational from April 8 this year. In the last year they also Project managed and delivered the Tinwald Traffic Lights development as part of the NZTA Tinwald Corridor Improvements project. Darcey said the team of 48 loyal employees live locally and take a huge amount of pride in building key local infrastructure in our district. “Where there’s an infrastructure need, we play a pretty big role in its design, construction and ongoing maintenance.” Fulton Hogan Ashburton also supplies large quantities of crushed aggregates out of their Lake Hood Quarry to meet the building and concrete market which they can supply district wide with their modern and efficient transport fleet.
