REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT A bespoke, architecturally designed new carpark building in Frankton, Queenstown has hit the mark in the local market, bringing a purpose-built amenity to a great location. Construction of the $20m three-storey concrete carpark building with architectural façade, which was completed by CMP Construction in May 2024, has attracted a strong response from locals who appreciate the value of having a secure carpark conveniently close to Queenstown Airport. This is only the first phase of a major development called Junction Village at 1 Hansen Rd, which is set to be a game changer for Queenstown. A shortage of staff accommodation has been a real headache for the district. The Junction Village project aims to mitigate that shortage, with an Australian-based developer recently given the green light to proceed with eight new buildings to accommodate workers at 1 Hansen Rd. In total, a maximum number of 476 residential units have been approved for up to 710 people. Fast-track consent was granted on 25 June, subject to conditions, under Covid-19 recovery legislation. As well as helping to meet a pressing need for more worker accommodation, this project is set to boost the local economy by generating employment and other spin-offs. “We provided design management for the carpark building and also put together the application with a planner for the shovel-ready process for the eight buildings, providing initial budgets and building concepts,” says Steve Savery, CMP Construction NZ Project Manager. The stylish new carpark building, finished with a perforated aluminium rainscreen façade, has 24 parks for large campervans on the ground floor. Level one has 56 spacious carparks, each complemented by storage lockers for items such as bikes, skis and golf clubs. There are a further 56 carparks on level two. There is more to come with this building: a proposal to add two more floors of dedicated worker accommodation is currently going through resource consent. Designed by Mason & Wales Architects, these new floors will include 32 units in total, along with attractive shared amenity spaces. The proposed layout includes one- to two-bedroom units through to four-bedroom premium accommodation over two-levels. “Effectively, this accommodation above car storage will mark the next phase of building.
