The global food giant is not only transforming its manufacturing processes but also pioneering research into regenerative agriculture, demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship that goes beyond factory walls, says Danone operations director Steve Donnelly. “At Danone we have a dual philosophy of return for investors but also not impacting “We use the mantra of ‘one planet, one health’ so it’s about protecting the planet in which we live and work.” the environment as we achieve that. We use the mantra of ‘one planet, one health’ so it’s about protecting the planet in which we live and work.” The regenerative agriculture soil health programme is a joint venture between Danone, Synlait, and AgResearch. “This initiative represents a ground-breaking approach in New Zealand to develop innovative agricultural practices that address climate change, enhance soil health, and support farmers’ livelihoods, while maintaining the high standards of our country’s dairy production,” Steve explains. The research project, with the first data set to be released in 2026, will study soil health on 10 farms across Waikato, Canterbury, and Otago. Two paddocks on each farm will be dedicated to comparing conventional practices with regenerative ones, focusing on greater pasture diversity and reduced nitrogen fertilizer use. The study is part of a larger $3.8 million initiative, with the New Zealand government contributing $2.8 million through its Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures fund, and Danone and Synlait investing $1 million worth of their own resources. “Our goal is to empower farmers with evidence-based strategies. The findings from this research have the potential to revolutionize New Zealand’s entire dairy industry, setting new benchmarks for sustainable farming practices.” Icon Logistics Ltd is proud to be associated with Danone Nutricia Icon Logistics Ltd is proud to be associated with Danone Nutricia 03 477 9595 www.iconlogistics.co.nz iconlogistics.co.n • Licensed Customs Bond Store • MPI High Risk facility • Devanning & Warehousing Specialists • Container & Curtainsider Transport NZ Wide
