Domestic and commercial civil construction specialist McWin Construction has been going above and beyond since being established in Oamaru in 2020, growing in line with the needs of its customers to become a construction partner with a comprehensive range of services uniquely tailored to the requirements of each project. After 14 years at Fulton Hogan and gaining his Level 4 National Certificate in Civil Construction Supervision, Mark Goodwin took redundancy and decided to leverage his expertise. Lacking the necessary funds to immediately pursue his true passion for civil construction, Mark decided to start with chimney sweeping as a means to generate income. McWin Construction began as McWin Chimney Sweeping when Mark, having swept his own chimney, started getting requests from locals to sweep theirs. Word spread quickly, leading to a surge in demand. One client in Kurow, for instance, drummed up another 14 customers. “I got another 10 chimneys, and another 10, and then people heard about me in Otamatata and I got 50 chimneys out there,” Mark recalls. A client’s advice to carry stock for fireplace repairs turned McWin Chimney Sweeping into a viable business. During the lockdown, Mark was able to reassess his financial position and had already started to spark a number of enquiries and leads regarding driveway construction. However, pricing challenges due to equipment hire costs prompted Mark and his supportive wife Kylie to make a bold decision: they sold their family home in Temuka to purchase a truck and digger. This investment paid off when, on his way back from Christchurch to pick up his machines, Mark secured a driveway project in Ashburton and stopped in to complete it. Leveraging his knowledge from Fulton Hogan and the requirements of health and safety to better secure further work in Timaru, he obtained his Site Safe certification. His new equipment caught the attention of the Whitestone Construction managers, leading to McWin Construction’s involvement in a footpath project in Oamaru with a tight deadline. Now, McWin Construction has grown to employ six staff members, providing extensive and varied expertise for a range of civil construction projects. “Whether it’s shaping landscapes, building driveways, supplying and laying asphalt or concrete surfaces, constructing boundary fences, building retaining walls, or addressing humble potholes, we approach every task with the same level of dedication and precision,” Mark says. “When you choose McWin Construction, you’re partnering with a team of passionate professionals committed to making your construction project a success.” This skilled team is complemented by trusted subcontractors and consultants, supported by gold accreditation from Site Safe and council approvals. Committed to safety, compliance, and customer satisfaction, McWin Construction is more than just a construction company—it’s a partner in realising clients’ visions, offering competitive pricing, unparalleled workmanship, and excellent results.
