LMA Timber TIMBER New Zealand’s leading supplier of reclaimed and sustainably sourced Australian hardwoods, LMA Timber, is set to open a new showroom in Wanaka at the end of August. This showroom will feature a variety of durable and skilfully milled hardwoods suitable for a broad range of building applications. LMA Timber, a family-owned business founded by Martin and Helena Thompson, is well-known for its architectural timber products derived from reclaimed and repurposed Australian hardwoods. Along with the Wanaka location, LMA Timber has three other showrooms nationwide, including locations in Christchurch, Tauranga, and Auckland. The purpose-built showroom at 50 Anderson Road will showcase LMA Timber’s extensive range of hardwood products, such as exterior and interior cladding, decking, solid/ engineered flooring, structural hardwood beams /posts, and various hardwood options for joinery and landscaping projects. Martin emphasises the growing trend amongst homeowners to utilise reclaimed and sustainable architectural timbers in new builds and renovations. He explains that using hardwood – particularly reclaimed helps to reduce your carbon footprint. When compared to other construction options like steel or concrete, timber helps to offset the extremely high carbon emissions these products produce to manufacture them. “By utilising reclaimed power poles, wharf, bridge and warehousing hardwood we feel like we are doing our bit for the environment in keeping construction waste out of landfills,” says Martin. With up to 200,00 power poles being available each year to repurpose, LMA Timber carries good stock levels of cladding, decking and various other hardwoods at their expansive Christchurch warehouse/yard. LMA Timber imports around 24 tonnes of Australian hardwoods each week including sustainably sourced non-tropical rainforest timbers. It was one of Martin’s main drivers for starting the business back in 2018 to educate about where hardwoods are sourced and to provide a non-tropical resource to reduce deforestation in the likes of the Amazon rainforest. Following Martin’s countless research, it is Martin’s strong opinion that much of what is harvested from these areas is unsustainable even with certification. This is due to inadequate regeneration, environmental degradation, illegal logging and corruption. The Amazon rainforest is 25 times the land size of New Zealand, making it impossible to know that all hardwood such as Green/Purple Heart comes from FSC sources. LMA Timber offers a carefully chosen selection of Australian hardwood Eucalypt species including Grey and Red Ironbark, Spotted Gum (NSW and QLD), Tallowwood and Blackbutt to name a few. In all LMA showrooms, they showcase a diverse range of timber finishes from dressed, hand-brushed right through to rustic or deeply weathered, ensuring that LMA can expertly supply a finish to suit any project. With LMA Timber being known as expert in the hardwood industry, they provide the NZIA/ ADNZ and NZILA with CPD training sessions/ webinars including Emerge, the generation coming through aspiring to be fully qualified architects. LMA are national members of the ADNZ and will often host breakfasts, warehouse/ showroom tours around New Zealand along with providing offices with various hardwood samples and literature. Slowly but surely, the market is seeing an industry shift from higher-maintenance softwoods to more durable hardwoods for their superior performance and building versatility.
