JBR Building BUILDING A striking contemporary new home in Tai Tapu – featuring sweeping curved timber walls that draw visitors through from the porch to a spacious living pavilion with raked timber ceilings – has won Lincoln building company JBR Builders Ltd its first bronze award for its debut entry into the Canterbury finals of Master Builders House of the Year. Aptly named ‘Ahead of the Curve’, the single-level three-bedroom home came away with the 2025 award, which signals JBR Builder’s growing reputation for high-quality bespoke architectural builds across Christchurch and Selwyn. For company owner and founder Joe Edgerton-Till, the Tai Tapu project was a professional milestone for the five-year-old, family-owned building firm. “It was our first time entering the House of the Year awards, so to come away with a bronze felt pretty special,” says Joe, who runs the business with the support of his wife Nicole, and balances work with raising their two young sons, Arlo and Harry. The 275sqm award-winning home is a study in flow and function as it guides visitors inward beneath a raked ceiling and past gable-end windows that open the space to sweeping views of the Canterbury Plains and Southern Alps. The home’s Y-shaped layout carefully separates three zones: the living pavilion, a private wing with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a snug, and an entertainer’s outdoor living area complete with fire and sheltered deck. Designed by Line Type Architectural of Sumner, the residence was a client build for a professional chef, who wanted dual kitchens. The indoor main kitchen provides access to the scullery through a sliding wall, while the kitchen features black marble bench tops and brass cabinetry. Black polished epoxy concrete over stone slabs from Teddington Quarry make up the kitchen flooring. A V-shaped utility zone houses the laundry, garage, and storage, all linked by discreet doors for ease of use.
