Kendall Park Equestrian is transforming 90 acres of stunning countryside into a worldclass horse training and care centre. The ambitious project, spearheaded by the Buttle family, stems from a lifelong passion for horses shared by mother Linda and daughter Maddy. With both having grown up around horses, and Maddy riding since the age of seven, the facility represents the culmination of years of planning. “The premise behind the business is that I wanted to build an equestrian centre where I could provide five-star care for the horses,” says Maddy. “The most important thing I want people to know is that while I want it to be five star, I want anyone in the community to be able to come here and do whatever they want at any level of skill. A safe space for people to have the best time they can.” Currently home to 15 horses, with capacity to expand to 25 once fully operational, Kendall Park Equestrian is already partially open, despite ongoing development work. The facility’s centrepiece will be a stateof-the-art fibre and sand arena featuring an ebb and flow hydration system, designed to maintain optimal moisture levels, minimise dust and reduce strain on horses’ bodies and legs. The arena is expected to be operational by the end of the year. Construction is being undertaken by Harrison Lane, which is also designing the bespoke barn complex in conjunction with Fat Parrot Architecture. Interior design specialist Philippa Whitaker from Whitaker Interiors is contributing her extensive equine knowledge to ensure every aspect serves both form and function. The local council has required extensive earthworks to be undertaken. Andrew Johnson of AJ Excavations has led these works over the last 18 months and has created an attractive environment, including a beautiful schist stone wall and significant buried infrastructure. Safety has been paramount in all construction decisions and has influenced the selection of horse-fencing materials. Specialist equine fencing has been installed by Andy Tindall of Otago Fencing Services using products from Stock and Noble, Duncan Equine and Waratah brands. “I have had endless interest and input from the public,” says Maddy. “I am actively involved with the local pony club and it’s been a real delight to hear what everyone needs and wants. It’s very ‘horsey’ down here, so access to good training and facilities will be an amazing addition to the area.” The facility addresses a significant gap in the region’s equestrian infrastructure. Despite Central Otago’s engaged horse community, limited training opportunities has meant riders often travelled considerable distances for specialised care and instruction, says Maddy. The business model encompasses multiple revenue streams, such as providing premium horse feeds and supplements, a range of agistment services and training facilities. Plans include bringing various trainers, specialists and speakers to create a comprehensive learning hub. Kendall Park Equestrian’s comprehensive services also include float, arena and round pen hire. It also operates as the regional stockist for Harvest Grains feeds, a premium New Zealand brand manufactured without preservatives in Cambridge. “We believe this to be one of the highest-quality fresh feeds with no preservatives. It is important to us to maintain optimal nutrition for horses in our care,” says Maddy. She manages the operations and oversees the horse care in conjunction with Linda and Michael, making Kendall Park Equestrian a real family run business. The facility already boasts a two-kilometre track that borders the entire property, available for hire, alongside a jumping paddock. Future developments include completion of stable complexes by 2027 incorporating specialised recovery and rehabilitation facilities. These will feature equine recovery equipment, including a vita-floor and solarium, positioning it as a destination for comprehensive horse care. “I want Kendall Park Equestrian to be a hub of learning and training, improving how we love and care for our horses,” says Maddy.
