REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Christchurch senior site manager for Southbase Construction, Cade Scott, has been recognised as a finalist in the Hawkins Site Manager of the Year Award at the Building Institute of Aotearoa’s 2025 Building People Awards, after helping to deliver the fastest-built Harvey Norman store in Australasia. The Harvey Norman Ravenswood project in Woodend spans nearly 11,000sqm and was completed four months ahead of schedule. The expansive structure includes a 3000sqm warehouse, 5000sqm main shop front, and additional tenancy space. The benefits to the built environment were recognised as substantial, as the project provided a new retail space that contributed positively to the local area. “I am in my dream job as a senior site manager,” says Cade. “Despite being offered project manager positions multiple times, I always decline because I am exactly where I want to be.” His decision to simultaneously construct the roof and steel structures – a complex sequencing challenge – gained the project an entire month in its programme timeline. “The engineers devised a sequence for the building’s construction, but adhering to this sequence would have resulted in significant delays,” explains Cade. “My challenge was to devise a quicker programme that maintained the build’s quality and met the deadline.” The project presented unique challenges, including environmental considerations due to its proximity to a river. As a greenfield site on previously undeveloped land, careful measures were required to protect local ecosystems, including safeguarding river grasses and fish habitats and checking soil content for historical fertiliser residues. Cade’s innovative approach proved instrumental to the project’s success. His leadership style emphasises collaboration and respect. He seeks input from subcontractors before devising methodologies, utilising their trade expertise effectively. Regular meetings with structural steel, concrete and engineering consultants ensured seamless coordination and prevented scope gaps. Throughout his career, Cade has also mentored numerous individuals, including the apprentice site engineer during the Harvey Norman project, where he provided comprehensive guidance for the entire duration of the project. “I believe in leading by example, always planning, communicating, and discussing with the project team and subcontractors,” explains Cade. “I always lead with trust and respect and run a tight ship, ensuring everyone understands my expectations and prioritises the project’s success over personal gain.” His commitment to diversity and inclusion was evident throughout the project. Cade organised site barbecues featuring meals from different cultures, ensuring workers from various ethnic backgrounds felt welcomed and included. Pre-start meetings enhanced work morale and created unity towards the shared goal of project success.
