T T Hugh de Lacy Austin Contracting CONTRACTING Knocking on the door of 40 years in the business, Christchurch’s Austin Contracting has set the standard for the construction of driveways, sports courts and car parks in the city that has bounced back from the earthquake devastation of 15 years ago. Son, Mathew and father, Roger Austin have been at the helm of Austin Contracting since it was founded it in 1987 – Mathew as general manager and Roger as owner, and it has become the go-to company for the full range of site works, including asphalting and concrete landscaping. Based in the suburb of Harewood, Austin Contracting’s longevity has a lot to do with the conscious development of its staff. “We’re actively involved in supporting our staff to achieve their goals and to learn new skills, providing clear pathways for personal development and gaining professional qualifications,” Mathew says. “We’ve been members of Site Safe since 2010, and all our staff are trained under that system; a number of them are first-aid qualified, besides having the usual qualifications and licences for the machinery they operate. “We also support and work with the New Zealand charity Mates in Construction that aims to cut the number of especially young lives lost to suicide. Our whole business approach is built around the quality and loyalty of our staff.” The company’s devotion to its staff has been recognised by its winning the Civil Contractors national NZ Connexis Training Award in 2022 after making the final the previous year. Mathew got his start in contracting through a family business, and also spent time working in management roles for large construction companies. Roger started out competing internationally in motocross and speedway and, after turning down an opportunity to purchase another business outright, he instead sank his money into buying machinery for the company he formed. It has decades of experience in bulk earthworks and civil construction, beginning with advising clients on tenders, then going on to site clearance, constructing hard landscapes and foundations, drainage, kerbing and even some landscaping. “We’ve not only got the machines, but we’ve got the expertise that ensures every job is done to the highest standards,” Mathew says. As well as earthworks and the civil construction sector, Austin Contracting is heavily involved in residential subdivisions, working alongside large civil firms as a preferred subcontractor.
