T T Kim Bowden ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN Spargo Architectural Design & Abode Architectural Build Nestled alongside the striking Remarkables mountain range, a new residential project on Taurus Lane in Queenstown’s rapidly developing southern corridor is nearing completion. Its thoughtful design blends seamlessly with the stunning landscape it sits within, while also respecting community design and building requirements. Architectural designer Tyler-Jade Spargo, of Spargo Architectural Design, was presented with a challenge early on in the project: stay true to an initial design concept presented by the client, but work with it to meet the stringent requirements of the subdivision’s Design Review Board. “We were provided with an H-shaped footprint that was angled to maximise the site and the views,” Tyler-Jade says. “However, the initial plan didn’t meet the Design Review Board’s guidelines. Given the site’s unique location – bordering both Jack’s Point and Hanley’s Farm – there were quite a few adjustments needed.” A top priority was capturing the views of the Remarkables. “We designed the windows to frame the mountains almost like works of art,” Tyler-Jade says. In the ensuite, the bold choice was made to include a full-length window, bathing the space in natural light and offering direct views to the hills. Scissor trusses through the living spaces as well as a solid, black wall, provide additional unique interior design elements. On the outside, the home showcases a mix of cladding materials – Gibbston Valley schist stone, Alpine tray metal, and western red cedar – that offer both durability and a natural aesthetic. This combination complies with the Design Review Board’s colour covenants while giving the residence character and a standout presence on its corner site. Another distinctive feature is the innovative entryway. Instead of a traditional veranda, the team designed a timber pergola tunnel leading to the front door, which met the board’s requirement for an entry point, while adding a unique architectural flourish. A matching feature frames the entry to the attached two-bedroom unit on the side, maintaining cohesion across the property. There is a generous outdoor area, including a grass lawn – one of the few in the street – alongside a patio accessible from both the lounge and master bedroom, extending the living space into the outdoors and providing a connection to the reserve behind the home. On the tools bringing the design vision to life is Abode Architectural Build Team, led by Ben Kent. With 10 years’ experience constructing quality alpine homes across the Queenstown Lakes District, Ben’s team stands out for its craftsmanship and dedication to detail. He describes this project as a “beautiful, low-maintenance family home that sits well against the stunning backdrop of the Remarkables”. While Spargo Architectural Design is a relatively new venture, founded just last year, it has solid roots in the region. “I completed high school, then moved from Oamaru to Dunedin to study, graduating at the end of 2016,” Tyler-Jade says. “I’ve been working in the industry ever since.” She describes the work of her two-person team as a balanced mix: about half involves full architectural concept designs taken through to complete building consent documentation, while the other half involves stepping in to refine existing concept plans provided, guiding clients through necessary tweaks to bring a project to completion. • Residential Earthworks • Commercial Developments • Drain Laying • Landscaping • Power and Telecom Proudly Supporting Spargo Architectural Design & Abode Architectural Build Contact Shane Phone: 027 610 7487 Email: Shane.smc@outlookcom Services CLARK FORTUNE McDONALD - LAND SURVEYORS - LAND DEVELOPMENT - PLANNING CONSULTANTS QUEENSTOWN | DUNEDIN | CHRISTCHURCH | GORE www.cmfa.co.nz 021 857 267
