T T Kelly Deeks MW Builders BUILDING With more than two decades of construction experience and a solid reputation for quality and care, MW Builders continues to play a key role in shaping homes and communities across the Top of the South. Led by directors Matt and Johanna Watene, the small but experienced team has built its name on reliability, hands-on project management, and a strong connection with clients from day one. Based in the Tasman region, MW Builders delivers custom new builds, renovations, and light commercial construction, while maintaining a deep focus on integrity and outcomes that last. Right now, Matt is on the tools and on-site at a bespoke home he designed in collaboration with the client, who is a former builder-turned-roofer. The two have previously worked together as subcontractors, and are now enjoying a creative and productive working partnership. “This project started with the client approaching some housing companies, but their concept plans didn’t suit the site,” Matt says. “It’s a forestry block with an elevated section, and he wanted something with natural materials and an alpine feel.” MW Builders came on board from the early stages, working closely with the client to refine the concept, design to a budget, and deliver a high-quality home tailored to the surroundings. The finished home will feature a mix of Alpine tray roofing and cladding, with cedar and schist adding texture and warmth. The build hasn’t come without challenges. Located in Upper Moutere, one of the areas hardest hit in recent rainfall events, the project has experienced multiple weather-related delays. The team has had to navigate access difficulties and a sloping terrain to keep progress moving. “It’s one of those sites where the weather really dictates what we can do,” Matt says. “But the client’s been fantastic. He’s really involved and it’s been a positive process, despite the conditions.” While the region’s construction industry has felt the sting of the broader economic slowdown, MW Builders has seen a recent uptick in work, including insurance repair projects following severe weather damage. One current rebuild in Riwaka is a complete strip-back to subfloor level after the home was inundated with flood waters. “These are difficult jobs, not just in terms of the building, but because you’re working with people who are going through something really tough,” Johanna says. “We have to be there for them, not just building or repairing their house, but helping them move forward.” That people-first approach is a core part of the MW Builders ethos. The team prides itself on good communication, care, and walking alongside clients throughout the journey, whether it’s building a dream home or restoring one after disaster. “We know it’s not just a project for our clients, it’s their home and their lives. We put ourselves in their shoes and understand that,” Matt says. “It’s not easy for anyone, but it’s also an opportunity for us to step up and deliver. This is the time to go above and beyond.” With strong roots in the local community, MW Builders continues to offer a full suite of services, from design to build, backed by a tight-knit crew that loves what they do. “We’re proud of what we build, and we stand by every project,” Matt says. “It’s about good people, solid mahi, and homes that last.” • LOCALLY OWNED & OPERATED • OBLIGATION-FREE MEASURE & QUOTE • WALL CLADDING • NEW ROOFS & RE-ROOFS • FASCIA / SPOUTING / DOWNPIPES 4A Barros Place, Richmond, Tasman P: 03 544 0458 E: admin@roofingtasman.co.nz PROUDLY SUPPORTING MW BUILDERS (2018) LTD www.roofingtasman.co.nz Phone: 03 5488 099 Email: admin@fusionplumbingsolar.co.nz CONTACT US Renovations & new builds Plumbing & solar maintenance Gasfitting Solar hot water installations Proud to support MW Builders
