Directors, Angela Watson and Jonny Watson, say the business has built its reputation on striving for high-quality builds and efficient timeframes. “I think the key is to show our clients that we care about the service we deliver through clear communication and customising a home to our clients’ needs,” Angela says. Alongside client builds, JW Building has been active in the spec home market, completing its second Gore-based project last year on a challenging riverside site. The three-bedroom, split-level home was built on a steep section overlooking the Mataura River, requiring significant earthworks and retaining work to make the site suitable for residential use. The home was used to showcase JW Building’s build quality, featuring cedar and plaster cladding, Otago schist detailing, granite bench tops, tiled bathrooms, and a strong focus on natural materials throughout. “We wanted to demonstrate the standard of homes we can build,” Angela says. “I love the aesthetics of natural materials like cedar and stone.” Lessons from earlier projects influenced the outdoor design, with retaining work creating flat, usable lawn areas that improve functionality and reduce maintenance for future owners. Angela says the project also highlighted the importance of balancing design ambition with liveability, particularly in a market where buyers are looking for both style and practicality. The success of the build has given JW Building confidence to move ahead with another spec home, with construction set to begin this year on a one-hectare lifestyle block just minutes from Gore. The four-bedroom home will feature cedar and plaster cladding, tiled bathrooms, generous indoor/outdoor flow, stone retaining walls, and elevated views across the Hokonui Hills. “That site gives us another opportunity to build something to a really high standard,” Angela says. “It has great sun, great views, and is still close enough to town for convenience.” While spec homes help smooth workflow during quieter periods, Angela says they also give the team a chance to showcase ideas without the constraints of client-driven design. “It allows us to build something that reflects exactly what we can do,” she says. “We have been lucky to work with great clients over the years as well, and we really appreciate the trust they place in us.” JW Building is a Registered Master Builder and licensed building practitioner operating across Gore, Invercargill, and wider Southland. Jonny is a certified passive house tradesman, reflecting the company’s growing interest in efficient, future- focused building methods. Looking ahead to the company’s 10th anniversary next year, Angela says the focus remains firmly on delivering quality homes tailored to each client’s needs. “We’re proud of what we’ve achieved over the past decade, but we’re just as excited about what’s ahead,” she says. “Our goal has always been to build homes that people genuinely love living in, and that’s exactly what we’ll continue doing.”
