Former professional cricketer Neil Broom took over the Fowler Homes Dunedin franchise in April, bringing with him a blend of sporting discipline, construction experience, and sales and management background. Neil’s connection to building began during a two-year building apprenticeship in Christchurch and although he did not complete his trade, he has remained closely involved in the industry through hands-on site experience and property development. A former schoolmate of Fowler Homes national owner Jason McGirr, a chance reconnection about 18 months ago eventually led to the opportunity to take on the Dunedin operation after several years in sales and management roles following his retirement from cricket five years ago. Neil says the opportunity to build homes for clients while drawing on his background in high-performance sport has been a natural fit. “You are still working as part of a team, with tradies instead of teammates, and the outcome still depends on preparation, communication, and execution.” Neil is working alongside contracts manager and wife Melissa to grow the business and introduce a stronger emphasis on home and income designs, which he says are already proving popular in other parts of the country. He says the dual income model suits a wide range of buyers, from first homeowners and investors through to families planning for long term flexibility and multigenerational living. “There is strong demand for it in other regions, and it is something I want to bring into Dunedin in a bigger way.” Two builds are currently underway, including a turnkey home in Flagstaff designed for first home buyers and investors, and a separate client build featuring a four-bedroom layout with multiple living spaces and a self-contained unit designed for future family support needs. Neil says both homes reflect a growing focus on future proof design, particularly for clients who want to accommodate extended family or changing living arrangements over time. The Flagstaff site, he says, offers strong lifestyle appeal, with elevated views across Dunedin and proximity to walking tracks, Ross Creek, and the city centre within minutes. He believes the area, along with wider Dunedin suburbs, is placed for continued residential growth as demand for new housing increases. Dunedin’s affordability compared to other centres, along with its lifestyle appeal, is drawing attention from local buyers and those relocating from elsewhere in New Zealand. Neil’s focus is on combining design quality with strong project delivery systems, supported by software that helps coordinate trades and maintain clear communication across builds. He also credits support from Fowler Homes Queenstown, led by Jason McGirr noting that collaboration across the group has been important in the early stages. Neil plans to expand the home and income offering, including a show home to demonstrate its flexibility.
