After more than 20 years in the building industry, Craig Cockburn Builders continues to take a hands-on approach to every project his Mosgiel-based business undertakes. “I’ve been building for 20 years, starting at one of the local bigger building firms,” says Craig, who established the company seven years ago. Today, the company remains a small but accomplished operation with just two people on the team, allowing Craig to stay closely involved in every aspect of the business. “We’re a small company... with two people on the team, so I’m on site every day and doing all the pricing as well.” That personal involvement has become one of the company’s strengths, with Craig overseeing projects from the initial quote through to completion. The company has built a reputation for tackling a wide variety of residential work. “We’re doing anything from fences to new architectural homes, townhouse developments and high-performance SIPs panel houses,” Craig says. While the main line of work for the company is in new builds, Craig says changing market conditions have seen the type of work shift over the past year. “Primarily we do new builds, but it’s been a bit slow, so we’ve seen more renovations lately -bathrooms and that sort of work.” He is optimistic about the future of the local building industry with Mosgiel experiencing significant residential growth. Several large subdivisions are being developed that are expected to support demand for housing in the years ahead. “There’s lots of expansion in Mosgiel with some large new subdivisions under construction,” he says. Craig believes the area’s continued growth presents opportunities for local builders who have established strong reputations for quality workmanship and reliable service. As demand increases, Craig hopes to grow alongside it. “We’re looking to expand and get more staff.” While the business is small, its capabilities are extensive. From straightforward fencing projects and home renovations to architecturally designed homes, townhouse developments and energy-efficient SIPs panel homes, the company has developed a diverse range of experience. Craig is still hands on in the business. “I’m on site every day,” he says. Working with the owner gives clients direct access to the person responsible for delivering their project and ensuring every job meets the standards developed over two decades in the trade. As Mosgiel continues to grow and new subdivisions take shape, Craig Cockburn Builders is preparing for the next chapter - one that includes expanding the team while maintaining the hands-on service that has underpinned the business since day one.
