As an independently owned contractor it is not tied to a single lines company allowing it to work across multiple networks throughout New Zealand, the Pacific region and even Antarctica. A recent example is the Chatham Islands Point Durham wind farm project where Independent Line Services designed and installed the electrical connections from the base of the turbines back into the grid through the island’s battery system. “Due to the remote location availability of materials, transport and planning all required careful consideration. Weather was also a factor but we are used to working in these types of environments,” says Independent Line Services design and estimating manager Grant Amos. The Chatham Islands project is not an isolated example of the company’s ability to operate in challenging conditions. It recently completed a solar farm project in Kiribati, carrying out connections to the solar farm and modifications to the existing power grid on an island where there was only one boat and one plane arriving each week. Independent Line Services has also delivered projects in the Cook Islands, Vanuatu and Antarctica giving it extensive experience in locations where preparation and problem-solving are essential. Established in 1995, Independent Line Services has grown into one of New Zealand’s largest independent line contractors with a team of around 100 people including electricians, linemen, cable jointers, power technicians and chartered engineers. The Christchurch based company provides complete electricity network services from design through to construction, maintenance and asset management. It can be engaged for individual design work, full design-and-build projects or ongoing network support depending on client requirements. The company is an approved contractor for Orion New Zealand and works with network companies, private developers, civil engineering consultancies and other infrastructure providers. It also holds ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certifications, SiteWise Gold status and Master Electricians accreditation. “We are definitely a go-to company for the difficult jobs and we can get them done,” says Grant. “The relationship we have with the client on the Chatham Islands project is strong and they have given us more work on the back of it.
