T T Alexia Anderson Bike business booming in Clyde Central Otago’s cycling network continues to grow with the Kawarau Gorge Cycle Trail now taking shape. What started as a small bike tour and rental business in Clyde is now a prominent one-stop-shop for cyclists riding Central Otago’s trail network. Bike It Now! opened in 2012 in Clyde’s Historic Precinct, initially offering bike hire, self- guided and supported trips on the Otago Central Rail Trail, Roxburgh Gorge Trail and Clutha Gold Trail. Duncan Randall managed the business for founders Ross and Petrea McCrobie before purchasing it in 2013 with business partners Lisa Joyce and Kathryn Fletcher. Under new ownership, the business expanded to include retail sales and a fully equipped workshop. They opened a second store in Cromwell in 2019 to meet growing demand and support riders ahead of the opening of the Lake Dunstan Trail in 2021. A third store was established in Three Parks Wānaka in 2022. Today, the company offers bike rentals, self-guided and supported tours, bike transfers, retail sales, repairs, accommodation bookings and full trail itineraries, making it a one-stop cycling hub. Duncan says the business remains driven by the philosophy: “We won’t be the biggest out there, but [we] want to be the best at it”. “Our motto is, ‘We are all about you’,” he says. The team is committed to supporting both visitors to the region and those who call it home. As Central Otago’s cycling network continues to grow with the Kawarau Gorge Cycle Trail now taking shape that commitment remains at the heart of the business. New mountain bike parks and local cycleways around Queenstown and Wānaka have also kept the cycling scene busy across the region. Duncan says the network offers more than just a trail. “The stunning, unique scenery, history and seasons make it very special. The local people are also part of the experience.” To ensure visitors enjoy their experience, the team at Bike It Now! makes sure they get the basics right. Each rider is matched to the appropriate bike, receives a fitting and trail briefing, and is equipped with the safety gear and support needed before hitting the trails. Customers booking tours can expect what Duncan describes as a fully personalised service with prompt correspondence, while making sure all members of the group have their requirements met. They are well cared for from the moment they arrive until they are safely off the trails and on their way back home. A lot goes on behind the scenes to make all of that possible. The company offers Shimano and SRAM workshops to help keep bikes running smoothly. Staff members are also continually upskilling on the latest repair technology. Looking ahead, Duncan says the priority is maintaining the high standards the company prides itself on, ensuring everyone riding Central Otago’s trail network receives the support they need. The team at Bike It Now! is driven by a passion for sharing the region’s backyard with cyclists of all ages and abilities. Asked what motivates and inspires the team, Duncan’s answer is simple. “The satisfaction of sharing the passion we have for the area and the trails on our back doorstep.
