It’s a long-term commitment to the region.” The ElectroNet Group has strengthened its long-term commitment to Central Otago with the opening of a purpose-built depot in Cromwell, providing a permanent base for the company’s growing operations across the region. Opened late last year, the new facility is home to 36 of the wider group’s 359 staff and a fleet of specialist equipment. From the depot, the team delivers electrical design, construction and maintenance services across the region, covering communities from Ettrick to Makarora, and everywhere in between. “The new depot reflects the growth we’ve experienced in Central Otago over recent years,” says Jordan Burt, operations manager. “We reached the point where it made sense to invest in a permanent home for our team. The work is diverse, ranging from replacing poles and installing underground cables through to network inspections, electrical design, sub-station construction and customer connections. Jordan says attracting and developing skilled people remains one of the industry’s biggest challenges, as network investment, electrification, and renewable energy continue to drive demand across New Zealand’s electricity industry. “For us, investing in people is just as important as investing in infrastructure,” he says. “We continue to take on apprentices across a range of trades, including line mechanics, electricians, fitters, designers and technicians. Developing the next generation of skilled people is essential if we’re going to meet the future needs of the industry.” Established by community-owned electricity distribution company, Westpower, in 1997, ElectroNet Group has grown well beyond its West Coast origins.
