T T Rosa Watson Marlborough-based winemaker Cloudy Bay Vineyards is celebrating receiving high praise from a prestigious international wine review and ratings organisation for its 2013 Pelorus Vintage. Recognised as New Zealand sparkling wine of the year at the 2026 Real Review Awards, it was incredibly meaningful for the whole team, Cloudy Bay wine communications manager Kat Mason says. Released annually to celebrate excellence in New Zealand wine, The Real Review Top Wineries of New Zealand recognises producers consistently crafting outstanding wines, independently assessed by a New Zealand team of Masters of Wine. Judges highlighted the vintage’s complex, mature flavour profile, achieved after spending nearly a decade resting on its lees before disgorgement. “Vintage sparkling wines are a long-term commitment, and this wine spent more than a decade evolving before release,” Kat says. “The 2013 vintage stood out because it exemplifies everything we’re striving for with Pelorus Vintage. Outstanding fruit from an exceptional season, combined with careful traditional-method winemaking and extended time on lees has created a wine with remarkable complexity, precision and longevity.” She says it is a reflection of both the quality of Marlborough as a sparkling wine region, and the experience of the team behind it. “This award recognises the quality of the vintage itself, but also years of patience, craftsmanship and collective expertise across our vineyard and winery teams.” She says Cloudy Bay has evolved considerably since it was founded in 1985, expanding from being one of the first Marlborough producers into a globally recognised New Zealand wine brand with vineyards in both Marlborough and Central Otago. “What’s important to us, though, is that throughout that growth our philosophy has remained the same – quality always comes before volume.” Today, Cloudy Bay wines are enjoyed in key markets around the world, with a strong presence across Asia Pacific, Europe and North America. Its range now includes chardonnay, pinot noir and Pelorus méthode traditionnelle. The adventurous spirit of the brand continues with Te Koko – a barrel-fermented sauvignon blanc, and Te Wāhi – a sophisticated Central Otago pinot noir from the two southern vineyards. The Marlborough vineyard recently completed an exciting expansion with an ambitious plan to build a new tank farm and receivals building to process its harvest. Working with Apollo Projects and incorporating the winery’s existing receival bins, the project included a press bay and two new tanks. The modern, highly efficient white grape receivals area and tank farm created the capacity to accommodate Cloudy Bay’s increasing fruit supply. Apollo engineered a six-metre-deep inground pit with a static steel hopper rather than a traditional truck ramp. This design change increased the company’s fruit-processing capacity, drastically sped up truck turnaround times, and vastly improved safety for the drivers.
