Hi-tech boiler systems Kelford Engineering’s electric steam boilers have been developed to provide efficient, compact and reliable alternatives for reducing reliance on fossil fuels. T T Karen Phelps Kelford Engineering is continuing to push the boundaries of boiler technology with its locally designed and manufactured Kelford Electric Steam Boilers helping businesses move towards cleaner energy solutions. The Christchurch-based business is believed to be the only company in the South Island designing and manufacturing its own electric steam boilers with new owners Nic Gebbie and Tim Bamford joining current owner Steve Bamford bringing the next generation of leadership into the long-established operation. Started in 1991 by Mike Kelly and Steve Bamford, Kelford Engineering has built more than three decades of experience supplying, installing, servicing and maintaining boiler systems throughout New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. The company’s evolution into electric boiler technology has positioned it at the forefront of industrial decarbonisation. It sells not only new boilers but also offers hire. Nic has been with Kelford Engineering for 16 years, having joined the company after a background in heavy machinery and plant operations in the textile industry. Steve’s son Tim has been part of the business for 13 years. The pair bought into the company last year ensuring the skills and knowledge developed over decades continue into the future. “Having younger blood coming through brings a focus on the latest technology,” says Nic. “We are always looking at ways to make boilers smarter and already offer electrical control systems that allow them to operate unattended with colour touch screens and alerts sent directly to phones.” Kelford Engineering’s electric steam boilers have been developed to provide efficient, compact and reliable alternatives for businesses wanting to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels. The self-contained systems incorporate integrated feedwater and blowdown tanks, meaning they generally require less additional equipment than traditional electric boiler systems. “Our electric boilers are something we are really proud of because we design and manufacture them ourselves,” says Nic. “We can provide a complete solution around the boiler from design and installation through to servicing and support.” The boilers are available in a range of sizes from 75kW to 600kW. Kelford Engineering can also supply larger Norwegian-manufactured Parat electrode boilers from 600kW through to 60MW for higher-capacity applications. Nic says the move towards electric technology reflects increasing demand from industries looking to reduce emissions. Kelford Engineering electric boiler technology meets the New Zealand Government decarbonisation targets. Kelford Engineering’s systems are suitable for applications including food manufacturing, laboratories, hospitals and other facilities where clean, efficient operation is essential. The company’s electric boilers are designed to meet New Zealand safety and seismic requirements featuring aluminium panels, stainless steel frames and an inherently safe design where no water means no current draw. They require only a water supply, power supply and drain connection to operate. Kelford Engineering provides complete turnkey solutions including installation, start-up services, operator training, maintenance and emergency support. It also supplies specialised parts manufactured in-house allowing faster responses when customers need urgent repairs. Nic says the company’s strength comes from combining decades of experience with a willingness to embrace new technology.
