The company carries out septic tank clearing and pumping out, grease trap cleaning, external drain maintenance, drain location services, hydro-jetting and holding tank clearing. Warwick and Liz Leech purchased an existing local business in 1980, which at the time was running one truck. Over the years the business has grown along with the increased growth in the community. Their son, Glen, has worked in the drainage business with them for over 25 years and currently manages operations. The yard is situated close to Darfield, where the team of seven operates from. Staff are friendly, with a wealth of experience, Liz says. The company frequently receives feedback from clients of a job well done. Over the last two decades these businesses, owned by husband and wife team Shane Carter and Hayley Newlands-Carter, have supported their community and developed their operations to meet local needs and have now expanded across the South Island. Seeing a gap in the portaloo market prompted the couple to build and supply portable luxury loo units that now cover events all over the South Island - everything from beautiful marquee weddings to corporate events, race days and music festivals, including VIP and now VVIP areas. “LuxLoos is supplying upmarket bathroom abolition units that leave their clients wanting more,” Hayley says. They are hugely popular over the event season which runs from September through to April and sees the majority of their loo fleet booked out. The off season during winter sees the team dealing with maintenance and working with event organisers in booking dates and events for the upcoming season. “We always have a clear idea of what our upcoming season looks like and can manage any last minute bookings to best suit our clients and their guests. It’s a juggling act but one that our team handles well. “Each event has different requirements so we always do our best to provide a service unmatched by any other business trying to enter the loo industry. “In all our years of providing luxury portable loo units to events, our loos have never had a major breakdown that prevented their use on site. We pride ourselves on this and it has helped build a strong base to help build up the business across the South Island.” removing waste and taking it away to disposal facilities. Standard portaloos are available for hire, mainly for building work sites and privately owned portaloos can be serviced. The specialised blasting trucks are also frequently out, dealing with blocked household and stormwater drains. The blasting trucks are a complete truck unit with a camera to check drains and help identify problems. These came into their own during the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes, Liz says. “We bought the first one not too long before the earthquakes (and) we were hectically busy through those few years after the earthquakes.” With Darfield growing rapidly the new developments will be connected to the new main sewer. However, Liz says it will be some years before existing properties will be connected and the wider rural community will still require servicing. The team of reliable, professional experts are local and know the area well, and many of the team members have been with the company more than eight years. “It is a job that does take a good year or two to learn the ropes. It’s physically demanding work and each property is unique. They also have Awamoa Sanitation which provides a professional waste service and portaloo hire in North Otago. The waste trucks provide services ranging from septic and holding tank cleaning, grease trap and stormwater sump servicing right through to maintenance work at established businesses across the region. “The portaloo side of the business handles many long-term hires for building and renovation sites across the district, for which we provide waste removal and cleaning services depending on usage frequency,” Shane says. “Locally we provide standard portable loos for a wide range of community events,” he says. “It’s about providing convenience to our clients — everyone has to use a toilet in some shape or form so we are helping fill that gap so to speak. “We are lucky to have a great team who know exactly what they are doing and take pride in their work,” Hayley said. Along with a strong administration team all the businesses including their well-established Laser Plumbing run out of one office. Shane met his wife, Hayley, who is from Oamaru and they moved to the Waitaki District and they haven’t looked back since. They now have three children: Ned, 18 who is Head Boy at Waitaki Boys High School and Ike, 16, who also attends Waitaki Boys.
