West Melton-based MHR Drainage is a family-owned business known for friendly, efficient service across Christchurch and rural Canterbury. Owner Josh Mackey is an experienced drainlayer, who leads a motivated and skilled team with the tools to fix everything from clogged toilets and faulty septic tanks to sewage and stormwater repairs. Josh started out as a foreman with the company (then operating as Gas Servicing and Plumbing) at the time of the Canterbury earthquakes, before becoming a director and then taking up full ownership in 2018. For Josh, quality service starts with having a happy team, who enjoy coming to work and doing a good job. He is committed to staff development and building skills and confidence. There are three apprentices on the MHR team of seven, including Josh’s younger brother, Logan, with all three now nearly qualified. “I like to encourage everyone who works with me,” says Josh. “Rather than telling people they’re not ready for a particular task, I prefer giving them that opportunity to step up and find out what they’re capable of. Alongside our apprentices, we have longstanding staff members with a lot of experience and know-how. We all work really well together.” From drainlaying or new builds to maintenance, repairs, drainage inspections and complete replacement solutions, MHR can do it all, and is committed to providing a quality, value-for- money service. The current focus for MHR Drainage is on smaller-scale yet specialist drainage work, mostly in the region’s residential and light commercial sectors. “As a smaller drainage company, we’re nimble and efficient. Our guys have a good understanding of how to undertake specialist drainage jobs and we often work on hill sites,” says Josh. “For example, we’ve got one coming up involving a retaining wall that’s failed down multiple levels of a hill. It won’t be easy to get machines in there, but we have had a lot of experience with this kind of challenging scenario.” MHR Drainage is also busy in the rural sector, often mitigating design flaws around effluent beds and septic tanks. “Unfortunately, we’re seeing more and more failures from septic tank systems that were designed in the 1990s and early 2000s. They’ve now reached their limit. Sometimes, it may just be failed pipework that we can fix, but more often than not a full replacement with new effluent bed and septic tank is needed, along with consenting.” In the city, it’s tree roots that commonly cause headaches for householders. Josh says some properties still have earthquake-damaged pipes. All it takes is a misaligned joint or a crack to allow tree roots in and create a blockage.
