Founded by interior designers Verity Lawrence and Penny Calder five years ago, Wanaka’s Architecture + Design Library was created to bring together the people, products and expertise needed for successful building and renovation projects — all under one roof. “If you’ve ever built or renovated a home, you’ll know the feeling,” says Verity. “One showroom sells flooring, another has benchtops, someone else has taps, another has paint, and before long you’ve spent weeks driving from supplier to supplier trying to make hundreds of decisions.” “Think of it as a library for building and renovating,” she says. “Instead of borrowing books, you borrow thousands of product samples — from carpet and cladding to benchtops, paint, lighting and everything in between, making it easy to compare options, borrow samples and make confident decisions.” Verity says AD Library also connects homeowners, renovators and commercial clients with architects, interior designers, builders and specialist suppliers, helping bring projects to life with the right expertise from the very beginning. Initially occcupying a modest 100sqm space, the Wānaka library is now approaching 1000sqm, with a new 300sqm Dunedin library opening in August. Verity says that alongside more than 90 product brands, the venues provide meeting rooms, co-working, private offices, design education and industry events. “We don’t sell products; we help people understand them,” Verity said. “Sometimes making that first decision is the hardest. People worry about making the wrong choice, but once they have the right information and someone to guide them through the options, those decisions become much easier.” Rather than representing a single manufacturer, AD Library brings together products from dozens of suppliers, providing independent product education before connecting clients with the right suppliers and design professionals for their project. The library also supports local retailers by showcasing an extension of their product ranges in one central location. Once selections have been made, clients are referred back to AD Library’s retail members for pricing, purchasing and installation, ensuring local businesses remain at the heart of every project. Today, AD Library is a valuable resource for homeowners, architects, interior designers, builders and joiners. Many professionals use the space as an extension of their own business, meeting clients, borrowing samples and working from the library while in the region. The conversation is also extending beyond the walls of the library. Through the Between The Walls podcast, Verity and Penny sit down with architects, designers, builders, suppliers and homeowners to share stories, practical advice and industry insights.
