The club is now open Tuesday to Saturday, from noon until late. “We only had deliveries and enquiries between 11 and 12, and Sundays were very quiet,” says Tracey. “Everyone was up in arms when our executive suggested closing on Sundays, so we said we will open if we have an event on. Like a lot of RSAs, we were open for all of these hours, which was costing us money. Covid did us a favour in that sense.” After the lockdown, RSA won a small business competition sponsored by Toyota New Zealand which was looking to mobilise and suppor t 100 small businesses by providing them with the use of a brand-new Toyota Highlander SUV for 12 months. "I wrote a letter about our poor old cour tesy van, which is an old rattly thing that’s done more than 300,000 kilometres, and we won,” says Tracy. “We have had it signwritten with Far Nor th Kaitaia RSA Suppor t Services, and that’s how we use it. Our suppor t officer, Colin Kitchen, takes a lot of people to their hospital appointments at Whangarei. That’s two hours away and now the ride is a lot more comfor table.” The RSA is now fundraising for a new cour tesy van, putting aside $100 every week from the door draw to build up a decent deposit. club manager Tracy Russell and club member bill clode with the Toyota Highlander the club won. angel erstich, president of the far north kaitaia RSa, presents Mana Taylor with a $1059 cheque as the 2020 recipient of the keith athol ferguson award. keith ferguson bequested the funds be used to support young people in the kaitaia area pursue careers in trades or on the land. Mana, who is in the second year of his four-year plumbing and drainlaying apprenticeship, will use the money to invest in his tools. Adjunct activity is strong, especially in the women’s section, golden oldies, snooker, outdoor bowls, dar ts, and 8 ball. The club hosted the Far Nor th Pool Association’s ‘Hen Of The Nor th’ women’s 8 ball competition on October 31, and the event was so successful a new women’s competition (Grand Wahine Toa) will be launched on March 27, 2021 and will be held annually at Far Nor th Kaitaia RSA. Armistice Day produced a good-turn out, and a black granite bench painted with poppies was unveiled. It was donated by Geards Funeral Services.
