Trev & Jannine The Blaze Rockers We “will” Rock You Trevor J. Needham I ’m still buzzing after our very successful national conference and AGM. Richmond Club was a fantastic venue and the mood of clubs around the country was extremely positive. This was par tly due to finally having the chance to get together and have some fun after all the upheavals of the past year and also because the club movement has weathered the Covid-19 storm incredibly well. We’ve had great suppor t from head office with the right people and the right systems to assist clubs to continue to be successful through all the uncer tainty. It was our biggest conference and AGM for some time with over 90 clubs registered and around 500 delegates. Social activities such as a bus hop saw us all visit a number of clubs around Canterbury and Friday night at Addington Harness Racing was also a great night for delegates. We had 25 exhibitors at the expo so it was an oppor tunity for clubs to see the latest and greatest products available. Speakers such as Nigel Latta, who spoke about bullying in the workplace, helped clubs to realise the impor tance of ensuring good employee relations and health and safety. All in all the conference and AGM was a great oppor tunity to learn something new, catch up with old friends and meet new ones. It was also a chance to let everyone know about the advances the movement is making in terms of technology, a par ticular area of speciality for me and one I am focused on in terms of Clubs New Zealand. We now have our very own ClubPos till system and our technical manager Leigh Williams will be star ting trials with a few clubs before this is slowly rolled out nationwide. It’s an impor tant step as this gives us better control over this impor tant aspect of our business and means we can offer better backup and suppor t when clubs need it. We are also hoping pricing will also be more attractive. Another impor tant development is the QR Code on membership cards. The aim is for clubs to have QR code scanning set up so people can just scan the code with their phone to get access to discounts etc. This will be more efficient and also provide us with better information on which to base business decisions. The next step is face recognition technology so watch this space. Last year due to Covid-19 33 of 53 spor ts tournaments unfor tunately needed to be cancelled. This year things are up and running again at full speed and that’s great to see. We are also increasingly welcoming RSAs into our membership and out of 103 RSAs nationwide 97 are now members of Clubs New Zealand. We recognise there are many synergies between our organisations and it makes sense to ensure we can both operate efficiently and assist each other where possible. We welcome these RSAs into our club family and hope to teach them things they might find useful and learn from them as well. The other big change has been the downsizing of our board from 13 areas to nine with the Case for Change being ratified. This process has sadly seen us say goodbye to a few very good board members who have made valuable contributions to the movement. Bernard Hickey, Prem Nath and Glen Beattie have all contributed a lot over their time and we thank them and wish them all the best for the future. Finally while things are all looking very positive just a reminder that Covid-19 is still with us and we have to carefully manage our operations for the rest of this year. Ensure everybody signs into the app when they enter your club and make sure you are operating your businesses in a way that allows you to be flexible and responsive if need be. We’re on the final leg of this race and together we’ll ensure this year is a successful and enjoyable one. The clubs movement is in a great position and I’d like to acknowledge your hard work and dedication during these challenging times, which has made this possible. We’re here to suppor t you in any way we can and the team at head office is only a phone call or email away. The whole club movement is very buoyant at the moment and I for one am very proud to be one of those leading it towards the bright future we know it has.
