4 INTERCLUB • VOLUME 27, ISSUE 2 - 2021 Renovations to cope with demand c l u b l i f e : W a i h i B e a c h M e m o r i a l R S A I N C RSA activity is central to the club, with welfare officers looking after the cohort of returned and service members. S por ting the best view in the land, Waihi Beach RSA is happily perched on an expansive site above a knoll just as you come into Waihi. Below the clubroom is a full size outdoor bowling green, and beyond, the beach and green/blue ocean beckons. Manager of two years, Jessica Harris, knows the club well. “I am originally from Waihi, and the Waihi Beach RSA is a special place for me being my first employ within the hospitality trade at 18 years old. I went on to refine my skills in Australia and running my own pub for 5 years. Being offered the role of Secretary/Manager some 20 years later was a huge honour” says Jessica. When Interclub spoke with Jessica, the club was in the midst of renovating, extending the kitchen area, in order to better meet growing demand from members and guests alike. “This is the star t of a major three-phase upgrade, involving revitalising the pool table area, followed by the bar and main area. It’s a big capital programme and it’s really good to see it now underway.” On average, in summer the club produces 500 meals per night and between 200 and 300 in winter. The club employs a team of 29 staff in total, with Head Chef Mike Bish putting the buffet style restaurant on the map. Jessica also makes mention of her ‘right-hand lady’ Liz Parker. On the second Sunday of each month a group of classic car enthusiasts descend upon the club, using the large parking space to display their cars. “The car enthusiasts come in and have breakfast, tea and coffee. “Around 120 people join us from 8am so the restaurant is a really busy and is also an impor tant activity centre for the club.” Free live music is often the drawcard for the weekend with the club looking forward to Dennis Marsh and Brendon Dougan preforming together on September 4. Always thinking of new ways to bring people and activity into the club, Jessica has star ted a Quiz night on Tuesdays, amongst the many other daily activities avaliable to the clubs members and their guests “It star ted small as these things often do but now we have 10 teams of around 6 in each team.” Giving back to a community that really suppor ts the club so well is also a priority. By way of gaming proceeds, the club has given community organisations upward of $30,000 in grants this year alone. “We suppor t local spor ts teams, local schools, charitable groups and events, including donating our local school the old cour tesy van,” says Jessica. RSA activity is also central to the club, with welfare officers looking after the cohor t of returned and service members. Help is given Sue Russell “We support local sports teams, local schools, charitable groups and events, including donating our local school the old courtesy van.” financially for some to receive hearing aids or eye care and also with hospital visits and meal delivery. NZMCA members are welcome to park their self-contained motor-homes and the like and stay for upward of three days. “All we ask for is a donation and during the course of the year we have hundreds of vehicles using this facility and coming in to enjoy our hospitality and meet up with locals.” With so much planned improvement ahead Jessica says Waihi Beach RSA will be really poised to grow well into the future.
