A Note from the Editors Welcome to our 2025/2026 magazine! Sarah joined our Neighbourhood Support Waitakere Whānau at the end of January, and we both haven’t stopped since then. Over the past year NSW have strengthened connections with our strategic partners, local businesses and other community organisations we work alongside. It has provided us with the power to work both more collaboratively as well as providing the opportunities, to promote our partners via our own network, on social media, as well attending events and where they may not be able to attend also. We both are looking forward to supporting our local community members who want to have those Community Connections, creating hyper local sustainable street groups, who Reach Out – Look Out – Help Out each other, providing resilience in streets, prevention of crime, looking out for our vulnerable, sharing Kai, holding Manaaki Street Events Get Togethers, supporting sustainable NS street groups. None of this would be possible without our wonderful committee. We thank them for their continued ongoing support. We would like to acknowledge and thank our funders & partners, without them we would not be able to continue supporting our local communities. We would like to acknowledge our sponsors for our Safer Plates & Free Tool Engraving events, for which we would like to acknowledge — West City Autos, Mega Mitre 10 Westgate & Henderson and Stanley Black & Decker. Thank you! Finally, we thank all of you, our wonderful members, supporters and our NSW network. Please do come and say Hi to us if you see us at an event or in your community. Sarah has been a great inclusion to the Neighbourhood Support whanau with Sharon they have both hit the ground running. Thanks & acknowledgments to our CPNZ West groups and NZ Community Policing Teams for their support and ensuring our Safer Plates Events continue to run consistent, successfully. Sponsorship from West City Autos group, Mitre 10 Mega Westgate & Henderson and Stanley Black & Decker provided our organisation with the support to update our drills, sign writing, tear drops and maintenance of the trailer, again you all have played a huge part in our goal to reduce plate theft. You will be aware that NS Waitakere became the Kaitiaki’s of NS North Shore in May 2022. We are now pleased to announce that a new Neighbourhood Support North Shore committee has formed, and they became incorporated in July 2024. We wish NSNS all the best, going forward. NZ Police Prevention Advice Vehicle & Online Prevention Tips Vehicle Crime Prevention Advice Please remember wherever possible to- • • Park your vehicle off the road, out of sight, or in secure car parking where possible • • Consider a vehicle alarm or installing a vehicle immobilizer. • • Always lock your vehicle when you leave it. • • Do not leave valuables (especially irreplaceable items) in vehicles – remove laptops, phones, wallets, reducing the appeal for offenders. Report suspicious activity to Police immediately - call 111 if it is happening now or 105 (or 105.police.govt.nz) if it has already happened. Online & Social Media Prevention Advice Be Aware of scammers offering items for sale on Facebook Marketplace and on local community pages via social media. Some scammers are offering delivery at an additional cost and will even offer cheaper delivery if you “buy now”. The only problem being…. there is no item for sale. Scammers will likely have already blocked you or deactivated their Facebook account by the time you realise you’ve been scammed. There are several steps you can take to protect yourselves from scammers: • • Insist on meeting in person so you can inspect the item for sale before you make a payment to someone you don’t know. • • Do not deposit money into another person’s account before you have received the item. • • Learn more about the person you are buying from – on Marketplace you can tap on a person’s profile on the product listing page to see if you have any friends in common, their marketplace activity, and any ratings they may have received. • • Trust your instincts – if it seems too good to be true, it probably is! If you are the victim of a scam, please report it to Police – we can only investigate if we know about it, and it’s important that these offenders are held to account for their actions. Reports can be made via 105 – either by phone, or online at 105.police.govt.nz Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111. 10 Page NS Waitakere

Message From Auckland Emergency Management Auckland Emergency Management (AEM) has been actively engaged in strengthening West Auckland’s resilience and readiness for emergencies. Recently, we launched the Local Board Emergency Readiness and Response Plans, marking a significant step toward empowering communities across Auckland. These plans provide tailored strategies for each local board, ensuring that residents, businesses, and community groups are equipped with the knowledge and tools to respond effectively during an emergency. In addition to the launch of these plans, AEM has been attending a wide range of events and meetings throughout West Auckland. These engagements have allowed us to collaborate directly with local groups, helping them to develop their own emergency preparedness plans and build resilience within their communities. By fostering strong relationships with local organisations and leaders, we ensure that Auckland’s neighbourhoods are well-equipped to face challenges, no matter how large or small. AEM also hosted a highly successful Community Civil Defence and Emergency Management forum, which brought together stakeholders from various sectors to discuss best practices, share insights, and explore ways to enhance community resilience. The forum provided an invaluable opportunity for participants to learn from each other and deepen their understanding of the vital role civil defence and emergency management play in safeguarding Auckland’s residents. Through these initiatives, Auckland Emergency Management is helping to create a city that is not only prepared for emergencies but also united in its efforts to build a resilient, connected, and well-informed community. Whether it’s launching new plans, attending community events, or running forums, AEM is committed to ensuring Auckland is ready to face whatever the future holds. 12 Page NS Waitakere
Message From Fire and Emergency NZ Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) batteries are everywhere, from e-bikes, e-scooters to vapes and power tools. They are light, compact, and long-lasting, but can be a fire hazard if they are damaged, mishandled, or improperly disposed of. Fire safety tips • • Do your research. Only purchase and use devices and equipment from reputable manufacturers and suppliers. • • Only use chargers and batteries supplied with the device, or certified third-party charging equipment compatible with the battery specifications (same voltage and current). • • Charge e-scooters and e-bikes away from exits and should be stored and charged outside or in a garage, shed, carport, away from living spaces. • • Charge smaller devices, such as vapes, phones, and laptops, on a hard, flat surface - when you’re home and awake. • • Do not overcharge your batteries. When your item is fully charged, disconnect it from the charger. Never store or leave batteries or devices in areas where they can be exposed to heat, moisture, direct sunlight or in parked vehicles where they can quickly heat up. If a small battery or device such as a vape or phone starts overheating • • Unplug it from the power outlet. • • Move it outside, away from any flammable material and windows or doorways. • • Small devices can be dropped into a bucket of water if this can be done safely. If your device starts to smoke or release fumes, evacuate immediately to a safe location and call 111. If a device or battery starts to smoke or emit flames • • Evacuate immediately and close doors (if safe) to slow the spread of fire. • • Once in a safe location, call 111 and wait for firefighters to arrive. Never go back inside, for any reason. Battery gases, vapour and smoke are highly toxic and flammable and must not be inhaled. Battery disposal • • Do not put lithium-ion batteries in the rubbish. • • Recycling is always the best option – contact your • • local council for a recycling location. • • Do not leave discarded batteries in piles. 13 Page NS Waitakere

Henderson Heroes 2025 Proudly brought to the Community by the Henderson Town Centre Community-Led Plan What a fabulous day HH25 was! With 30 + local Emergency Responders and Community Services Heroes attending this event, our amazing local community came along and supported the wonderful event. The sun was out in full making for a very hot day. With skilled pre-planning, we had free water and sunscreen on hand. Our FREE sausage sizzle went down a treat and more than 850 + sausages were eaten! We had fabulous acts on the day and everyone loved our Zumba group, Afas Dance 4 Health, who got everyone up and moving. Shades of Grey and Resuga had everyone singing along to their songs. Our St Johns resuscitation challenge was great and our NZP, FENZ and St Johns reps took up the challenge on the day. There were amazing spot prizes, vouchers and giveaways provided by the agencies who attended as well wonderful community minded local businesses. Both adults and children had fun visiting the attending agencies to get their event passport stamped and to find out about their services. The Henderson Heroes Planning Team are already in planning for our 2026 Henderson Heroes event. 15 Page NS Waitakere

Hidden Disabilities Sunflower What is the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower? The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a simple tool for you to voluntarily share that you have a disability or condition that may not be immediately apparent – and that you may need a helping hand, understanding, or more time in shops, at work, on transport, or in public spaces. Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it is not there Globally 1 in 7 of us live with a disability. That is approximately 1.3 billion people. But while some of us experience a disability that is visible, many have a non-visible condition or experience a combination of both visible and non-visible conditions. These disabilities can be temporary, situational or permanent. They can be neurological, cognitive and neurodevelopmental as well as physical, visual, auditory and include sensory and processing difficulties. They can also be respiratory as well as chronic health conditions such as arthritis and diabetes, chronic pain and sleep disorders. Making the invisible visible As diverse as these conditions are, so are your individual access needs and the barriers you face in your daily life. So you can opt to wear the Sunflower to discreetly be seen in shops, at work, on transport, or in public spaces. 17 Page NS Waitakere
