A Note from the Editors Welcome to our new look Neighbourhood Support Waitakere magazine! We’ve had a variable twelve months alongside our community with a major focus on wellbeing and connectedness as we’ve worked together in support of each other over the days, weeks and months which have continued to oscillate in varying degrees. Our membership has strengthened in capability and have looked to us for both guidance and collaboration whilst also reaching out to those around them to ensure neighbours were supported throughout. This March, we have launched our latest resource ‘Manaaki Street’, a children’s book written for our pre-school and junior primary school aged children, taking them on a neighbourhood journey of community interaction and support. With support from our National Body NSNZ this book is being rolled out across the nation along with joining information for our local support network. This resource has created a hugely positive response and it provides us a charming and endearing engagement with our younger community members and their families. Our Committee remain steadfast in their support of the organisation and we commend them for their ongoing enthusiasm and passion. We look forward to another productive year and thank our funders and supporters, without whom we wouldn’t be here. We thank our members and partners for their ongoing support and look forward to catching up with you all whilst out and about! A message from the CHAIR Michael Chan Foung I think we all agree this past year has been an enormous challenge for not only ourselves but our entire community both nationally and world wide. For many of us, the stress of having family and friends overseas has left us somewhat anxious and challenged in terms of maintaining contact and communication. Working and living locally, I have witnessed the effect this pandemic has had on our vulnerable community members. I am proud of the capabilities our Neighbourhood Support network has, in that within the first week of the initial lockdown our staff had established direct communications with our vulnerable members and were able to contact them personally by phone before any other local network completed their preparations. Our team were able to consolidate and disseminate relevant and reliably sourced information via our extensive social media networks, newsletters and personal communications. We are able to boast a trusted and sustainable network which continues to grow and thrive alongside our community members who share passion, enthusiasm and motivation towards community connectedness and wellbeing. We have developed and implemented new procedures enabling our staff to work from home, whilst maintaining the engagement expectations of our members. Throughout the year we have had some reprieve and managed to continue our daily business, strengthening working relationships with our strategic partners and likeminded community groups. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our funders, sponsors and volunteers who are such an integral link within our organisation, we are collectively looking forward to a positive future in the face of adversity, linking neighbours with neighbours to ensure we continue to Reach Out, Look Out and Help Out. Manaaki Street — NSNZ Book Launch Neighbourhood Support New Zealand have today released their new children’s book, Manaaki Street. Manaaki Street, which has been in production for over a year, is written by Neighbourhood Support New Zealand’s Chair and Neighbourhood Support Waitakere Coordinator, Louise Grevel, and illustrated by Kerin Casey. The book tells the story of what Neighbourhood Support is all about, by following a child and their mother on a simple walk through their neighbourhood. It offers an easily accessible way for our young tamariki to understand the benefit of caring communities. Manaaki Street will be shared as a resource for local schools and early childhood centres, School Community Constables, local libraries. Regional Neighbourhood Support groups will also be distributing copies in Children’s Day packs, at Neighbours Day Aotearoa events, and with specific families in need of educational resources for their children. Neighbourhood Support New Zealand’s Chair & Neighbourhood Support Waitakere Coordinator, Louise Grevel, stated that she was very excited that the books would soon be in the hands of children across New Zealand. “It’s been a long time in the making so I am very ready to see the younger members of our communities hearing and sharing the story.” The book launch coincides with Neighbourhood Support’s March campaign, Celebrate Community, a campaign that asks people to find fun and unique ways to strengthen the bonds in their communities. If you know of a primary school or preschool who may be interested in having this fabulous resource to utilise, please email Louise directly nswaitakerecoordinator@gmail.com Louise Grevel Writer of “Manaaki Street” NSNZ Chair & NS Waitakere Coordinator 11 Page

Hi, I’m Aron McKeown and I’m the Waitakere Youth and Community Manager based at Henderson Police Station. My role consists of leading the teams in the Youth and Community space, they are the Massey and New Lynn Community Stations, and our Henderson based Prevention Units, Youth Aid and Public Counter. I am fortunate to lead these high performing Sergeants who do an excellent job leading the prevention activities in your area. My message to all of the Community is the importance of prevention. Preventing crimes is our best way to keep our Community safe. There are plenty of things you can do to prevent crime from happening and we have further information on our website: https://www.police.govt.nz I would like to acknowledge our relationships with our partner agencies; Neighbourhood Support and Community Patrol, they support and help drive our vision to be the safest country. The last couple of years have been extremely tough but your commitment to your community is truly appreciated Reporting crime is vital as well, reporting lets us understand any crime patterns occurring, and from this we can effectively task prevention activities to the right place to prevent future harm. Therefore, I encourage you to report to Police when you observe a crime, either call 111 in an emergency - if it’s happening at the time, or 105 – if it has already happened. We have some amazing people at our stations if you prefer to speak to someone in person, at the moment the Henderson station is our only 24 hour available station. Thank you for taking the time to read this article and I look forward to the on-going positive relationship you have with us. The following pages in this edition offer Prevention Advice around THEFTS FROM VEHICLES. I look forward to getting back into our Safer Plate events soon. Regards Senior Sergeant Aron McKeown Message from Our Police Youth & Community Manager 15 Page
Theft from Vehicles Prevention Advice Remember Thieves search vehicles for cash, bank cards, sunglasses, GPS, laptops, mobile phones, wallets and purses, sporting equipment, clothing and any other valuable property left in a vehicle. Thieves use a range of techniques, but most offending is opportunistic. The following tips will help to minimise these opportunities and keep your vehicle safe: • Always lock your vehicle and take keys with you when you leave. • Close all windows and sunroofs • Park in well-lit area when possible. • Do not leave valuables in your car. • If you have to leave valuables in your car, make sure they are out of sight. • Do not leave documents with personal information behind especially passports. • Do not leave keys to your home / business / boat in your vehicle. In an emergency call Police on 111 or 105 if it is a nonemergency or has already taken place. 16 Page
Many parents worry about the safety of their children, whether on the way to or from school, in the park, or anywhere else where constant adult supervision is lacking. One of the biggest concerns for parents is teaching their children how to be properly wary of strangers when out in public places. Yet the possibility of harm to children from unknown people, usually called “stranger danger,” can sometimes be overstated. Much of the fear surrounding “stranger danger” comes from second- or third-hand stories, media reports, and educational films. Understandably, this information causes us to worry about our children. Yet, despite all of the attention focused on “stranger danger,” a closer look at child abductions doesn’t necessarily justify our conclusions on the severity of the problem. In the majority of cases, the danger comes not from a stranger, but rather a perpetrator known to the parent or child. Please note STRANGER DANGER IS NOT LONGER taught in New Zealand by the police or schools....for these reasons. Teach children to trust their feelings if they feel uncomfortable, scared, or confused. Children need to know to get away from that person and tell a trusted adult. Teach your children that it is more important to get out of a threatening or uncomfortable situation than it is to be polite. Children also need to know that they should never go anywhere with someone they don’t know and should never get into cars or go into houses of neighbours they don’t know very well unless you say it is okay. Parents need to be sure of their family’s rules and procedures and set a good example when out with their children. Greeting the local police officer, road patrol monitors, or postie when walking with your child makes it clear that casual interaction with people they do not know well isn’t always harmful. The most important thing for parents to remember when talking about personal safety and “stranger danger” is that it is both a very real problem and that it should be approached carefully so as to educate children rather than scare them. Kids Safety Message for Parents and Caregivers—From Bryan and Bobby 17 Page
Safety Tips for Parents: • Know your child’s route to and from school. Practice walking with them to school during the school holidays so you can identify safe and unsafe places • Designate “safe” houses/areas in your neighbourhood where your child may go if they are in danger. • Know your child’s after school activities. • Know your child’s friends and their parents and have a list of their phone numbers and addresses. • Know what your child is wearing each day. • Never put your child’s name on the outside of their clothing. • Keep a current photo and video of your child handy. • If your child doesn’t want to be with someone, ask them why, and pursue the topic until you find a reason. • Make sure your child knows that adults shouldn’t ask children for help and that adult’s shouldn’t ask children to keep secrets. Safety Tips for Kids: • Make sure you know important information (full name, parent’s full name, address, and phone number). • Never go anywhere with someone you don’t know, even if they offer you candy or ask for help. • Don’t get into cars or go into houses of neighbours you don’t know very well unless Mum,Dad or your caregiver says it is okay. • Have a secret code word that you and only your parents know. If someone doesn’t know the secret code word, don’t go with them. • Even trusted people shouldn’t ask you to do something that makes you uncomfortable. • It’s okay to say “No” to adults. • Shout “No” or “Stop” if someone touches you inappropriately, then tell your mum or dad. • Be as loud as possible if you are in danger. • If you are lost or in danger, you can locate a pay phone or a public phone and dial 1-1-1 for free. Understanding Risk & Planning For Disaster Resilience In Your Community Auckland’s geographical location, diverse coastline and mild climate make it a great place to live. It can also make the region prone to many natural hazards. A hazard is something that is a danger or risk. We think of these as events that can negatively affect what we value - our communities, economy, and environment. Flooding, severe weather and coastal inundation are common events in Auckland; less so are volcanic activity, tsunami, or earthquakes. These natural hazard events can happen anywhere, any time and without warning. Being prepared for emergencies is the best way to stay safe. Building Community resilience No one knows your community better than you and the people in it. Auckland Emergency Management (AEM) encourages all communities to come together and talk about how to get ready and plan what you will do during an emergency. There are a number of resources available to assist your community to build disaster resilience, such as the Community Resilience Plans. These plans can help your community identify how they can support one another before, during and after an emergency. Visit https://www.aucklandemergencymanagement.org.nz/community-ready to check the resources and learn more about how you can help keep your community safe. Auckland Hazard Viewer Use Auckland Hazard Viewer map to see if the natural hazards could affect where you live, work or play and to start conversations with your family and friends about what you would do in an emergency. 20 Page

Safer Plates & Free Tool Engraving Neighbourhood Support Waitakere have been hosting community pop up Safer Plates and Free Tool Engraving Events since 2011 in outdoor and undercover car parks across West Auckland, working alongside Community Policing teams and Community Patrols. We replace the standard screws on car number plates with safer tamper proof stainless steel screws. In 2021 there were 986 number plates stolen, which were used for crime related purposes across the Waitemata district. Stolen number plates may be used in incidents of petrol drive offs, burglary, theft, drug related crime and to drive through toll roads etc. With support from our Henderson Massey Local Board, we are able to offer this service free to Super Gold Card holders and anyone who has had their plates stolen, the small fee of $4 applies to the wider community. Combined at these events is a Free Tool Engraving Service for DIY’ers and Tradies for their tools. Drivers license details are etched onto the tools, this enables quick identification if stolen goods are recovered. Keep an eye on our social media and newsletter for upcoming dates - we look forward to seeing you at our next event! Gumboot Friday is our free kids counselling programme. Since April 2019 Gumboot Friday has raised over 3 million dollars for free kids counselling. So far we’ve used 2 million dollars to pay for over 16000 sessions for 3900 kids aged 5 - 25yrs. We anticipate that with the money we have and what we will raise over the next 12 months Gumboot Friday will pay for a further 20000 free sessions before the end of 2022. To make sure 100% of the money raised for Gumboot Friday goes to our kids, I Am Hope pays the required 9 cents in every dollar donated to fund the admin costs of running the service. I Am Hope does not touch the Gumboot Friday money. It is kept in a dedicated Kiwibank account and gets paid out upon an invoice from a New Zealand accredited mental health professional.
Bike Theft Prevention Tool — 529 Garage Aotearoa There's a new anti-theft bicycle registry in NZ - 529 Garage. After it was launched in Vancouver, bike theft decreased by 20% a year. Having a comprehensive register means that it's much harder to on-sell stolen bikes and eventually thieves will stop stealing bikes they know are registered with 529 Garage. Only 4 easy steps 1. Find your bike's serial number. It's usually under the bottom bracket (where the pedals are) so you'll need to turn it upside down. Sometimes it's at the bottom of the seat tube. 2. Take a photo (or photos) of your bike. 3. 3. Go to https://529garage.nz/bikeakl and enter your details (all you really need is an email and the serial number) and upload your photo(s). 4. Email 529@bikeauckland.org.nz with your name and postal address and they'll send you out a numbered shield to stick on your bike. The success of this system relies on numbers! Please pass these instructions on to friends and family around NZ (you don’t need to be in Auckland). Register. Report. Recover! https://project529.com/garage 27 Page
