Welcome to our 2023/24 magazine! We have had big changes since our last edition. Recently, Louise Grevel, one of our NSW Coordinators, accepted her new role as CEO of NSNZ. Huge congratulations to Louise! Louise started with NSW in 2010 as the Junior NS Coordinator, then in 2011 shared the NS Waitakere Coordinator role with Sharon. Louise & Sharon have exponentially grown NS Waitakere. We know that because of Louise’s experience, the knowledge she takes with her puts NSNZ in great hands. NSW also took over NS North Shore in 2022 when the NSNS committee dissolved. We were lucky to find our newest team member, Rebecca Smith, who became the NSNS Coordinator at the end of 2022. Rebecca will also share the NSW Coordinator role with Sharon. We would like to acknowledge the patience & support of our NSNS street contacts & members while these changes have been implemented. Thanks to Sharon’s diligence we have still been able to provide the same consistent service to the NS Waitakere area. We are looking forward to the changes & challenges ahead of us as we support & grow NSNS & maintain the platform we have in NSW. None of this would be possible without our committee. We thank them for their steadfast support & commend them for their ongoing enthusiasm & passion. Additionally, we would like to thank our funders & supporters, without whom we wouldn’t be here. Finally, we thank all our members for their consistent support & look forward to seeing you when we are out & about. A message from the CHAIR Michael Chan Foung Talofa Lava, Our warmest greetings to you, our readers and supporters. On behalf of our Team, I would like to acknowledge the recent Cyclone Hale and Gabrielle events which have created horrific and ongoing difficulties and hardship for our worst affected communities, in particular those who have experienced the catastrophic trauma of losing treasured loved ones. Our deepest and heartfelt thoughts are with all who continue to experience the shocking aftermath of these events. We’ve witnessed the very best of community spirit and I commend everyone involved in the Emergency response and subsequent recovery efforts. Our teams were quick to support, connect and reach out to our most vulnerable and affected, working in with our collaborative partners whilst managing their own storm damage and effects. Despite the adversity, we continue to maintain a trusted, reliable and sustainable network which continues to grow and thrive in profile, ensuring our ongoing commitment towards community connectedness and wellbeing. Our staff remain flexible in their approach to core business, ready to adapt in an ever changing and diverse climate of priorities. We continue our core daily business, maintaining our popular signature events such as Safer Plates, along with community engagement and local event participation as we strive to build and strengthen the working relationships with our strategic partners and likeminded community groups. I wish to thank all of you who support our commitment in ensuring our community members feel safer, resilient and connected communities. Knowing our neighbours and encouraging communities to Reach Out, Look Out, Help Out are key motivators in enhancing all aspects of social wellbeing. Stay safe Soifua Manuia Michael 10 Page

Manaaki Street Events Tara Road Pre—Christmas Manaaki Street Event Tara Road NSW group held their annual Pre–Christmas get together on a Saturday in November 22. Everyone brought something to share for the kai tables and there was a feast of food, as diverse as the people who live on the street. Once again, the local church provided the space to hold this event. Residents chatted and had a fabulous time. They are already planning their next Manaaki Street Event! Miltonia Ave & Orchid Place Manaaki Street Event The Miltonia Ave & Orchid Place residents held their annual Neighbours Day BBQ on Saturday 1st April 2023, hosted by one of their NSW Street Contacts. A flyer was placed in every mailbox, inviting everyone to the event, as well as a request for gazebos, tables, chairs and help to set up. It was great for them to catch up with neighbours they had not seen since their last get together, as well as a chance to welcome and sign up new members to their area. The event went ahead with the support of Henderson-Massey Local Board grant, this enabled them to provide meat, bread, sauces, and salads. Neighbourhood Support groups are our 24/7 community connectors. Whether you hold your own street group event and everyone brings something along and you have a shared feast, that ends up being as diverse as the people who reside there, or you utilise the local boards grants available in your area. The best and most rewarding feeling is connecting with our neighbours with a shared kai. 12 Page
Neighbourhood Support Waitakere and the Waitakere Community Policing teams have been running the Safer Plates events consistently since 2012. We also work alongside the Community Patrols in the area where we are holding an event in. We are grateful to the business venues who cohost us for these events, we would not be able to do what we do without their support. During this time, we have changed the number plates screws on more than 7500 vehicles. We are hoping to expand this service to the North Shore at some point during the 2023/34 period. Our events are posted on Facebook on the Neighbourhood Support Waitakere page and on the North Shore, Rodney & West Auckland Police page. So follow either of those pages for updates of where the next events are being held. Safer Plates & Free Tool Engraving Events The cost is a donation of $4 = $1 per “Stainless Steel” screw and the service is FREE to our SuperGold card holders and to the members of the public (number plate theft referrals) who have had their number plates stolen. We reinstall their new plates for free with our safer ‘stainless steel’ screws. We also provide the FREE tool engraving to our Tradies or for residents to bring along their home tools to be engraved. Kia ora, My name is Rebecca Smith. I am very excited about my new role as the North Shore Coordinator for Neighbourhood Support. I grew up on the North Shore. I went to Sherwood Primary, Northcross Intermediate and Rangitoto College. I have lived away from Auckland for a few years now. During that time I have had four children, who are all teenagers now. I have lived in Queenstown, Christchurch, the United Arab Emirates, Tonga and recently Waihi. My background is in Education. I have been a teacher for the last 12 years, teaching children aged 5-12 years. For the last 6 months I have been a consultant for a homeschooling support provider, which I love because I am able to support parents as teachers for their own children. My own children are aged 14, 16, 17 and 19. I have 3 boys and 1 girl, so I am very busy. I also have a passion for health and fitness and playing 8-ball. I love to read, go to the beach and keep my pot plants alive. Family and community are very important to me. I believe everyone needs connections and to feel that they belong and are valued. I look forward to working with you all to keep our neighbourhoods safe and connected. Please reach out if you need support or have any questions/queries. Edit: As of May 2023, I am now working full-time for Neighbourhood Support. I have taken on Louise’s Waitakere hours as she has left to become the CEO of Neighbourhood Support NZ. I am very excited to be sharing the coordinator role with Sharon from Waitakere and looking forward to our future in Neighbourhood Support. Nga mihi nui koutou katoa & Talofa lava, my name is Michael Alofa. I’m a Specialist Advisor for Auckland Council. For 16 years I’ve held the council and police relationship portfolios with NSW-Neighbourhood Support Waitakere. I enjoy my role, because it allows me to collaborate with agencies, and support community groups, like NSW. My role acts as a conduit on operational matters between local boards and NSW. I want to acknowledge the NSW committee; the chair, Michael Chan-Foung; vice chair, Sila Faga Siaki and the committee members. To build effective and sustainable teams, you need good governance through effective leadership. Recently, I received news of Louise Grevel’s departure after 13 years. I want to pay a special acknowledgement to Louise and Sharon Peters whom I’ve known since the establishment of NSW in 2007. These amazing ladies have helped in the strengthening of NSW, delivering, and supporting so many wonderful community initiatives. Louise and Sharon play an integral part in the safer plates & engraving tools initiative in partnership with the police. They have supported the Waitākere Ranges Safety Campaign, street BBQ’s, HTC-Henderson Town Centre Plan, and many more. I want to thank them both for their commitment and dedication and wish Louise the very best in her new role. I want to welcome Rebecca Smith into the NSW family in her new coordination role across North Shore and the West. NSW brings people and neighbourhoods together to create safe, resilient and connected communities. The best security you can have to protect your community is joining Neighbourhood Support. the vulnerable people in your street, receive emails and up-to-date alerts from our community partners, including NZ Police and be better prepared for emergencies. This year has been extremely tough for all of us. My thoughts and prayers go out to all families that are still struggling with huge losses, months after the flooding and cyclones. My condolences go to the families of the two FENZ Officers that lost their lives carrying out rescues during the cyclone. I was privileged to volunteer at the west CDC-Civil Defence Centre during this period. We were blessed out west to have implemented a community-led approach. I thank and acknowledge all the community leaders, churches and organisations that came to support the west CDC. Located in the North Shore & Central Auckland? We'll come to you! Hearing Assistive Technology (HAT) We all know working smoke alarms save lives, however conventional smoke alarms may not work for people who are Deaf or hard of hearing. Fire and Emergency Risk Reduction Advisor Nick Linton, says there are specialised smoke alarm systems available for these people. “These alarms have extra features such as extra loud and/or lower pitch alarm sounds, flashing strobe lights, or vibrating mechanisms. “Ideally, someone who is Deaf or hard of hearing will have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms fitted with bed-shakers, strobe lights and pagers, or a combination of these,” Nick says. “Everything is designed to make responding to a smoke alarm as fast and safe as possible.” If you, or someone you know, have had hearing loss it is worthwhile checking if you can hear your conventional smoke alarm, especially during the night. Nick says Deaf or hard of hearing people should contact their audiologist, hearing therapist or support organisation, such as Life Unlimited or Deaf Aotearoa, to have their needs assessed and the appropriate equipment assigned to them. He says there is also a nationwide service available where Deaf or hard of hearing people who have difficulty using a phone can contact the emergency services (Police, Fire and Ambulance) in an emergency via text messaging on their cell phones. People register with Police to use this service. The Hearing Assistive Technology process has supported hundreds of Deaf and hard of hearing people so far and is keen to support more. Handy Hint from the New Lynn Police Team Use An ID Tag On Your Keys There have been hundreds of sets of keys handed into New Lynn Police station in the past 5 years - None of which have an ID tag. Just a phone number or drivers licence number would enable the Police to return them to the owner. Some of the electronic keys/remotes in the picture cost hundreds of dollars to replace. This is the latest pile of keys that have been handed to the Station that can not be reunited with their owners. It’s simple — #IDTagYourKeys Purchase a cheap keyring tag from your local dollar or more store, or have a dog tagged engraved, as in the below pictures and add one to your keys with either your drivers license number or your name and mobile number. 20 Page

Theft from Vehicles Prevention Advice Put yourself in a burglar’s shoes. If you think like them, you can identify security risks around your home. The following tips can minimise these opportunities: • • Lock your doors and windows including your sheds and garages. • • Photograph/record make, model and serial numbers of valuables. • • Consider engraving your tools and bicycles with your drivers license number. • • Consider installing sensor lights. • • Store ladders away. • • Keep hedges and plants well trimmed - do not give burglars a place to hide. • • Check and maintain damaged fencing and locks. • • Note down and report car registrations and/or descriptions of suspicious vehicles or persons. Burglars often scope out a place. Remember In an emergency call Police on 111 or 105 if it is a nonemergency or has already taken place. 23 Page

Oceania Career Academy Launches New Health and Wellbeing Programme Oceania Career Academy (OCA) is excited to announce the launch of new free* programmes specialising in health and wellbeing. OCA has a proven track record as a private trades training provider, so this represents a new development. However, OCA is the education arm of The Fono’s integrated model of care. The Fono also provides wrap-around services, including health, medical, social, dental, Whanau Ora, and LagiOla, or Healthy Minds. These services are offered in six locations across Auckland and Northland, including OCA. The new health and wellbeing programmes align well with The Fono’s wider remit. Furthermore, OCA’s Academic Director Debra Robertson-Welsh points out that there is a massive shortage of workers in the health and wellbeing sector. “Our NZQAaccredited programme offers new exciting pathways into work or further study in this vital sector”, she adds. And they also provide excellent career opportunities for successful graduates within The Fono, Robertson-Welsh advises. From July, OCA will offer Level 2 and Level 3 NZ certificate courses in health and wellbeing. The Level 2 course is a foundation qualification for students who want to develop their skills and contribute effectively within their whānau and the wider community. And it also provides a pathway to entry-level jobs with health and wellbeing providers, including The Fono. 26 Page
The Level 3 qualification equips students to understand modern health and wellbeing workplaces. And it provides the skills and knowledge needed so graduates are work ready. According to Robertson-Welsh, the assessment model is an innovative feature of the programmes. ‘We assess by a portfolio of evidence,’ she advises. All class activities and projects can be used for assessment. Robertson-Welsh says that students are supported to achieve with ongoing feedback from the expert OCA team. ‘That way, students successfully meet their goals,’ she reports. Applications are open, and up to 30 places are available on the Level 2 and 15 on the Level 3 courses. Both programmes are free* and run for 20 weeks. ‘The health and wellbeing programmes are an exciting new development for OCA and The Fono,’ declares Executive Chair Tevita Funaki. ‘We encourage our Fono partners and stakeholders to keep an eye out for those interested in starting a career in health and wellbeing and to point them in OCA’s direction,’ he added. *Terms and conditions apply. West Auckland turned into a sea of colour as thousands of people came together to celebrate the Holi festival. The much-loved festival, hosted by Waitakere Indian Association, returned after a three-year absence due to Covid-19. The celebration was a great way to showcase Indian culture and bring the community together in a fun and inclusive way. Supported by more than 20 Indian and local community organisations, the event showcased the diversity within the Indian communities and was a platform for different communities to come together, celebrate and learn about diverse traditions. Festival-goers danced along to the DJ’s music and enjoyed a wide range of food. Neighbourhood Support Waitakere attended and were the recipients of a community award. We look forward to the next Indian Festival 'Diwali' on Sunday 29 October at the Trusts Arena and next year's Holi Mela, as does the rest of West Auckland.
