A message from our CHAIR Michael Chan Foung Talofa Lava Warm Greetings to you, our readers and supporters. On behalf of our Team, I would like to acknowledge the ongoing difficulties that our communities have faced both from the catastrophic effects of the weather events in 2023 and the cost-of-living crisis we are facing across Aotearoa. Neighbourhood Support has never been more relevant, and our connected networks are providing the support that is needed for our groups, from sharing excess kai, produce or being that ear for someone to share with, sustaining mental health and wellbeing for members. We are finding that our resilient communities have the ability and community caring to think outside the box and support each other. We have had some changes with our staff, and Rebecca Smith who had been working in both the NSNS & Waitakere space, has now moved onto another role under NSNZ. NSNS now has a new Coordinator, Taylor Lake, we welcome you Taylor and we know you will be an asset to NSNS. After a long break due to covid we are seeing those wonderful events and festivals being held again, helping Māori and Pasifika people to connect. Our Safer Plates events have been ongoing and consistent, working alongside our CPNZ groups and NZ Community Policing Teams. Sponsorship from West City Autos group, Mega MItre 10 Westgate & Henderson and Stanley Black & Decker provided our organisation with the support to update our drills, sign writing, tear drop and maintenance of the trailer. Thank you to everyone who supports our commitment to Reach Out, Look Out, Help Out and being the key motivator of making sure our community members feel safer, connected and creating resilience in our communities. Stay safe Soifua Manuia Michael Chan Foung 9 Page NS Waitakere & NS North Shore

Ni sa bula vinaka, Tālofa lava! My name is Taylor Lake, and I am overjoyed to embark on this new chapter as the North Shore Coordinator for Neighbourhood Support. Embracing my Pasifika and Māori heritage I grew up in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, which lay the foundation in my involvement within the youth and community development sector. My journey has taken me across borders, serving as a camp counsellor in America, before making Tāmaki Makaurau my home. Delving into Social Work studies in West Auckland, I actively represented the Henderson Campus on the Student Council. The challenges posed by Covid prompted my move to the lovely Browns Bay, where I forged connections with remarkable community organisations focused on enhancing youth and community wellbeing in the Bays. Collaborations with entities such as Bays in Action Think Tank Network, the East Coast Bays Library, Auckland North Community and Development - ANCAD, and Heart Of The Bays opened many doors to diverse opportunities. Expanding my voluntary engagements, I undertook contracts exclusively centred on Community and Youth Development. My side mahi involves cultivating Youth Voice in the Bays as your Youth Development Coordinator and collaborating closely with Bays Youth Voice—a group dedicated to amplifying the voices of rangatahi aged between 11-25. Wearing many hats within this vibrant community, I consistently prioritise downtime with my amazing partner, Whānau, and friends. I’m genuinely passionate about my work and am eagerly anticipating the commencement of this new journey with Neighbourhood Support. Me mahi tahi tātou mo te oranga o te katoa. We must work together for the wellbeing of everyone. Noho ora mai, Taylor Lake Meet your NS North Shore Coordinator 10 Page NS North Shore

Meet Our NZ Police Community Liaison for Waitakere & North Shore Grant Watson Senior Sergeant Youth and Community Manager Waitemata West (Waitakere) Why did you become a Police Officer? I really enjoy working with people and doing what I can to help in difficult times. Policing offered me this opportunity alongside a challenging and varied working environment. My Grandfather was a police officer and I recall fondly some of the story’s he used to tell, I very lucky to have been able to follow in his footsteps. How long have you been a NZ Police officer for? 27 years What do you like / love the most about your job? No two days are the same in the police you just never know what you might be dealing with. It is also a privilege to serve the community in a way that only the police can. What do you like / love about the community area you work in? I live and work in the West and it I can say without doubt it’s a proud and passionate community. Waitakere is a beautiful place with some the best beaches in the world and a pretty special environment. The community is very resilient and I found has a real can do attitude. The community agency’s the we work with are super supportive and really want to make a difference. Its very refreshing to know we have that support and are not alone in our vision to make Waitakere a safer place. 11 Page NS Waitakere & NS North Shore

Caroline (CJ) Miles Senior Sergeant Area Manager Youth and Communities Waitematā East (North Shore) Why did you become a Police Officer? When I was 16, a family friend was the District Commander. I looked up to Mike and all that he did in his role in the community. I may have also had a slight obsession with the 90’s Police TV programme ‘Police Rescue’. I saw the police officers hanging off cliffs, rescuing people and thought THAT is the job for me! After completing a degree at University, I joined Police. At 21, I went to Police College & started my lifelong career with Police! How long have you been a NZ Police officer for? I‘ve been in the Police for 26 years. I have worked in Wellington, Auckland and Waitemata in many different squads, from frontline policing, the Criminal Investigation Branch, deployments to the Solomon Islands, Family Harm, Child Protection, Adult Sexual Assault, Fraud and Organised Crime. What do you like / love the most about your job? What I love about the job has changed as I have grown with the organisation. In my 20’s I loved the excitement and challenge I faced every day. Now, I am finding enjoyment & challenge in leading our people, learning the strategies of police and working beside key stakeholders in our communities. This engagement is a key crime prevention strategy as they allow government and NGO’s to collaborate and work together to make NZ the Safest Country. I take pride in the fact that I am doing everything I can as a mother to make my children’s community safe, and I role model Our Values of professionalism, respect, integrity empathy and diversity. What do you like / love about the community area you work in? In my role as Youth & Communities Manager, North Shore, I work with some incredible people in Youth Aid, Browns Bay & Glenfield Police Stations, and School Community Officers. The North Shore is so diverse and has various challenges. A key area is the shift in demand in youth crime. Our interagency preventative approach is having some success, but we rely heavily on community engagement to tackle this problem. 12 Page NS North Shore

Manaaki Street Events Neighbourhood Support groups are our 24/7 community connectors. Whether you hold your own street group event where everyone contributes or you utilise the local boards grants available in your area. The best and most rewarding feeling is connecting with our neighbours with a shared kai. Tara Road — Tara Road group held their annual get together. Everyone brought something to share for the kai tables and there was a feast of food, as diverse as the people who live on the street. Once again, the local Church and Church Family provided the space to hold this event, plus they organised an Ice-cream truck, candy floss machine, pop corn machine, free raffles and a bouncy castle. Everyone had a fabulous time. Miltonia Ave & Orchid Place — The residents held their annual Neighbours Day BBQ on Saturday in early March. The late afternoon BBQ had around 50 residents in attendance. Everyone brought a dish to share and once again HendersonMassey Local Board grant was applied for to supply the bread, meat, sauce and salads. Their local resident ice-cream vendor supplied free icecreams for everyone who attended. Make your Street a Manaaki Street—Contact us for more information! Heversham Place & Coupland Court — Harendar and Kiran held their annual Manaaki Street event in their Streets and approximately 60 people attended including children. It gave the two streets a chance to reconnect with their neighbours as well as having a shared kaii 13 Page NS North Shore

Safer Plates & Free Tool Engraving Events Neighbourhood Support and our Community Policing teams have been running the Safer Plates events consistently since 2012. We also work alongside our local Community Patrol Teams in our area. We are grateful to the business venues who cohost us for these events, we would not be able to do what we do without their support. During this time, we have changed the number plates screws on almost 8000 vehicles. Thank you to our sponsors, West City Auto group, Mega Mitre 10 Westgate & Henderson and Stanley Black & Decker. Our events are posted on Facebook on the Neighbourhood Support Waitakere page, and the North Shore, Rodney & West Auckland Police page. So follow either of those pages for updates of where the next events are being held. For the small cost of $4 = $1 per “Stainless Steel” screw used, to cover the purchasing cost, you can have your screws changed to Safer Screws, and the service is FREE to our SuperGold Card Holders. Community Patrols WE NEED YOU! For a neighbourhood to become a community you need to feel safe in it. CPNZ (Community Patrol, New Zealand) is a community-based volunteer organisation who help the Police to make local communities safer environments to live in. They provide extra ‘eyes and ears’, patrol local streets in sign written vehicles, and undertake surveillance and observations. Our aim - to be a deterrent, to stop the crimes before they happen. Do you want to make a difference in your community? Community Patrols are made up of everyday people, from all walks of life. There are Community Patrol groups in most areas of the Auckland region – who are always on the lookout for new members. Would you like to be part of the team? Full training and uniforms are supplied. Police Security Clearance check required. Contact your District representative to find out more. Be aware of scammers offering items for sale on Facebook Marketplace and on local community pages on social media. In some cases the scammers are offering delivery at an additional cost, and will even offer cheaper delivery if you “buy now”. The only problem being….there is no item for sale. And the scammer will likely have blocked you or deactivated their Facebook account by the time you realise you’ve been scammed. There are a number of steps you can take to protect yourselves from scammers when buying items via social media: • • Insist on meeting in person so you can inspect the item for sale before you make a payment to someone you don’t know. • • Do not deposit money into another person’s account before you have received the item. • • Learn more about the person you are buying from – on Marketplace you can tap on a person’s profile on the product listing page to see if you have any friends in common, their marketplace activity, and any ratings they may have received. • • Trust your instincts – if it seems too good to be true, it probably is! If you are the victim of a scam, please do report it to Police – we can only investigate if we know about it, and it’s important that these offenders are held to account for their actions. Reports can be made via 105 – either by phone, or online at 105. police.govt.nz Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111. Be Cautious When Making Purchases Off Social Media 16 Page NS Waitakere & NS North Shore

Connected Communities March was a vibrant month for Neighbourhood Support North Shore as we engaged with our community through various events, promoting our kaupapa of fostering connected communities. We came along to Westfield Albany for their Safer Plates initiative and helped 67 cars with tamper-proof screws, enhancing community safety in our Albany area. Big mihi to the Westfield staff for inviting us along for a great afternoon. Our very own Taylor, also the Neighbours Aotearoa Connector for 2024, hosted a community talk event at the East Coast Bays Library “after hours” and had the awesome Rebecca share about what we do here at Neighbourhood Support and next steps in growing this kaupapa on Shore. The evening followed with inspiring speakers from The East Coast Bays Library, Dear Em, Bays Work in Progress, Jobs for Mums, Mairangi Arts Centre, and Open and Connect all sharing how they’re Growing Together and supporting connections within our Bays community. We set up a neat little stall at the Beach Haven Block Party in the Opaketai Garden and offered some family-friendly activities and spot prizes. It was a lovely afternoon with live music, Kapa Haka and amazing food. Big thanks to Birkdale Beach Haven Community Project for inviting us along. Melissa Powell, our Devonport Takapuna Local Board Member, invited Neighbourhood Support along for a lovely street BBQ in the Sunnynook area. Despite the weather, neighbours still came out and shared notices, concerns, and hopes for their street. March’s bustling activities reflect our commitment to ‘Connected Communities: Waiho i te toipoto, kaua i te toiroa’—keeping close together, not wide apart. We eagerly anticipate more opportunities to foster unity and connection within our Northshore community in the months ahead. 17 Page NS North Shore

It is a common misconception that in the event of a fire you will be able to escape easily, just by walking out the front door. However, this is not the case. When we are confronted with an emergency situation such as a house fire, our instincts can betray us. Waitemata Community Risk Reduction Advisor, Michael Hoyne says having a 3-Step-Escape-Plan could save your life, “It’s easy to get out of your house when there is no smoke and you can see the route, but when you take away that visibility and your stress levels are heightened, a practiced plan is invaluable for getting out quickly”. A house fire can kill in less than three minutes so it is vital that you can get out as quickly as possible. Having smoke alarms installed in every bedroom, living room and hallway will give you an early warning but with only one or two minutes to get out after the alarm sounds, you need to move quickly. “When you are woken from a deep sleep by a smoke alarm, it is obviously going to be shocking, you will be confused and disorientated and struggle to find your way out,” says Michael. The only way to be truly sure that we will do the right thing in the event of a fire is to plan for and practice it before it happens. Creating your 3-Step-Escape-Plan is easy, all you need to do is decide on your: 3-Step-Escape-Plan 1. First escape route. 2. Second escape route. 3. Meeting place. Make sure everyone in your household knows these three important steps and ensure they practice it regularly. Head to www.escapemyhouse.co.nz to make your household’s 3-Step-EscapePlan, it could save your life. 18 Page NS Waitakere & NS North Shore

“Love Where You Live” isn’t just a slogan—it’s a way of life championed by Neighbourhood Support. This theme goes beyond mere affection for physical spaces; it’s about nurturing a deep connection to our communities and fostering a sense of belonging among residents. Recently, Neighbourhood Support North Shore’s Coordinator had the privilege of being invited to the grand opening of the Mairangi Arts Centre’s new Community Garden, an event that exemplified the spirit of “Love Where You Live” in action. Activities like a nature trail organised by the Scouts and interactive stations peppered around the garden brought people together in a meaningful way. It was heart-warming to see residents of all ages engaging with nature, learning about sustainable gardening practices, and connecting with each other. What struck them the most was how events like these contribute to crime prevention and community cohesion. By creating inviting and inclusive spaces like the community garden, Neighbourhood Support encourages positive interactions and a sense of ownership among residents. This not only enhances safety but also fosters a strong sense of community pride and responsibility. The grand opening was a perfect example of how “Love Where You Live” is more than just a sentiment; it’s a catalyst for building stronger, safer, and more connected neighbourhoods. As they continue to support initiatives that bring communities together, it’s important to remember that collective efforts can make a significant impact on the well-being and vibrancy of our communities. Together, through acts of love and care for our neighbourhoods, we can create a future where everyone feels a deep sense of belonging and takes pride in calling North Shore home. April has been all about making our neighbourhoods safer and more resilient with Neighbourhood Support leading the charge. They've brought together residents, stakeholders, and community champions in a proactive effort. Our Northshore Coordinator has been right in the middle of it all, joining street BBQs, working alongside the likes of Auckland Emergency Management, community champions, teaming up with Police, and collaborating with local social services and key stakeholders. One highlight was the community street BBQ in Beach Haven at the Maria Assumpta Parish, a joint effort alongside Police and local social services to create a 'be safe, feel safe' atmosphere. But it's not just about safety; it's about building trust and unity within our communities. The theme “Safer Communities” is all about practical actions everyone can take, from simple steps like locking doors to bigger initiatives like forming community resilience groups. Each action contributes to creating safer and more connected neighbourhoods where everyone feels at home and secure. Neighbourhood Support's dedication to Safer Communities shows our collective responsibility for neighbourhood wellbeing. So, what's your plan? How will you contribute to making your neighbourhood safer and more connected? Me mahi tahi tātou mō te oranga o te katoa. “We should work together for the wellbeing of everyone”.
