Neighbourhood Support Waitakere & North Shore 2024/25

Caroline (CJ) Miles Senior Sergeant Area Manager Youth and Communities Waitematā East (North Shore) Why did you become a Police Officer? When I was 16, a family friend was the District Commander. I looked up to Mike and all that he did in his role in the community. I may have also had a slight obsession with the 90’s Police TV programme ‘Police Rescue’. I saw the police officers hanging off cliffs, rescuing people and thought THAT is the job for me! After completing a degree at University, I joined Police. At 21, I went to Police College & started my lifelong career with Police! How long have you been a NZ Police officer for? I‘ve been in the Police for 26 years. I have worked in Wellington, Auckland and Waitemata in many different squads, from frontline policing, the Criminal Investigation Branch, deployments to the Solomon Islands, Family Harm, Child Protection, Adult Sexual Assault, Fraud and Organised Crime. What do you like / love the most about your job? What I love about the job has changed as I have grown with the organisation. In my 20’s I loved the excitement and challenge I faced every day. Now, I am finding enjoyment & challenge in leading our people, learning the strategies of police and working beside key stakeholders in our communities. This engagement is a key crime prevention strategy as they allow government and NGO’s to collaborate and work together to make NZ the Safest Country. I take pride in the fact that I am doing everything I can as a mother to make my children’s community safe, and I role model Our Values of professionalism, respect, integrity empathy and diversity. What do you like / love about the community area you work in? In my role as Youth & Communities Manager, North Shore, I work with some incredible people in Youth Aid, Browns Bay & Glenfield Police Stations, and School Community Officers. The North Shore is so diverse and has various challenges. A key area is the shift in demand in youth crime. Our interagency preventative approach is having some success, but we rely heavily on community engagement to tackle this problem. 12 Page NS North Shore
