Baz Janssen grew up on a dairy farm and although he always had farm ownership in his sights, he set off on a building apprenticeship after finishing school to get that all important trade skill under his belt. He started his own business and thought: “I’ll keep building until I run out of work.” 10 years later, Baz Janssen Building is not even close to that point. Even five years ago, when the milk pay out crashed and Baz Janssen Building had a client base of up to 95% farmers with a bit of residential in be- tween. The business had been gearing up to take on more residential projects, and Baz had established a dedicated crew of residential builders. Baz Janssen has even diversified into the commercial market with a new community centre including a 220 seat auditorium, offices, and a café, currently under construction in Otautau. Until recently, Baz Janssen Builders was heavily involved in building new dairy sheds and dairy infrastructure for conversions, but with new rules on land use from Environment Southland, this market has now slowed down. However new winter grazing rules are now forcing farmers to look at alternative methods of calving management and alternatives to wintering on crop, in particular housing, stand off pads, and feed pads. • to page 106 “People are still a bit nervous ... they don’t want to make a million dollar investment then find out in two years’ time it doesn’t comply.” Feed pad nearing completion.
