Since 1987. “Everyone is looking at different alternatives to better their farming practices,” Baz says. “People are still a bit nervous about what they are allowed to do – they don’t want to make a million dollar investment then find out in two years’ time it doesn’t comply.” Another area with lot of new ideas and innova- tions is dairy effluent, and people are going ahead with upgrades that haven’t really been seen in Southland before. Baz Janssen Building will be completing the concrete work for a new compost- ing barn later this year. “They’ve had them in the North Island for 10 years already and they love it. An aerobic system of good bacteria solves the issue of effluent. I’ll keep in contact and find out what did and what didn’t work for them.” All of these innovations are of particular inter- est to Baz and his wife Theresa, who bought a 100ha with additional lease land, 450 cow farm at Lochiel, Winton at the start of this season. “I’ve learnt so much. It hasn’t been easy but that’s the part I’ve really enjoyed - learning new things is really exciting.” He, like all dairy farmers, wants to make improvements that are going to work well as cheaply as possible, and is looking at ways to achieve that as the builder, such as doing his own importing to keep that cost down as much as possible. Baz Janssen has diversified into the commercial market with a new community centre including a 220 seat auditorium, offices, and a café, currently under construction in Otautau.
