NZ Dairy Autumn 2021

Lely Juno important part of operation Lely New Zealand is delighted be associated with Oete Goat Farm, one of New Zealand's largest goat milking herds producing some of the highest quality goat milk products in the world. Lely supplies a broad range of products for the agricultural sector, including milking robots, care products and automated feeding systems and barn cleaners. Waikato manager Lawrence Holden says Oete Goat Farm’s use of the Lely Juno feed pusher, which ensures its goats have constant access to feed, is an important part of its operation. “Increasing your feed pushing frequency pays o ; it stimulates frequent feed consumption throughout the day and night, resulting in a higher feed intake, less wastage, and more milk in the vat.” This not only has a positive e ect on animal health, but also improves fertility, production and inancial results. The Lely Juno is equipped with intelligent software that enables it to independently gauge the distance to the feed fence required in order to push the feed optimally. This is based on the amount of feed in the feeding alley and its resistance which is central to the Juno’s pushing pattern. Using the Juno is very easy; the operator simply inputs the route, the minimum distance to the feed fence, the pushing frequency and the feed type per group. Based on this data, the Juno determines the resistance level and pushing force. The Juno ensures the feed is always pushed well, even between feedings. Lawrence says a healthy goat is a productive goat and one that eats 10 to 14 meals of fresh feed a day. For this reason, it is vital that feed is always available at the feed fence to ensure an optimal, stable pH level and a more e icient use of feed. With the use of the Lely Juno, labour savings are estimated at 180 hours per year, valuable time that can be spent on other activities. For extra lexibility, the machine can be equipped with several options. These include a smart skirt lifter that minimizes wear and tear while travelling between pushing lanes and allows left and right pushing for increased capacity. Furthermore, electric bumper protection and an LED light for enhanced visibility during the night can also be included. All options can be combined in the unit’s Flex package.
