Director David Law says with the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) and the Primary Sector Climate Change Partnership, (He Waka Eke Noa) currently at the forefront of farmers’ minds, they need to have the tools to mitigate the regulatory costs that will be imposed. “We started by focusing on the reduction of nitrogen to help farmers meet the requirements of the Clean Waters Accord, followed by the reduction of methane emissions, and carbon sequestration.” However, the ETS needs a more comprehensive approach, especially considering the significant cost of the proposed levies, he says. “At 15c for every kilogram of milk solids, an 800 DAIRY SERVICES » New Image Group/NIG Nutritionals Goat milk production results in 75% less methane and 95% less net carbon emission per kgMS than bovine milk. Alan Law ( Demonstration Farm) feeling lucky holding one of many four leaf clovers. “We have nine farms in the South Auckland and North Waikato region that we source milk from, all of which are under long term contracts with us. While goat milk has been around for the best part of thirty years in New Zealand it’s now becoming much more recognised as an alternative to cows milk particularly for people sensitive to cows milk.” Goat milk contains only A2-type protein, which is easier to digest and causes less discomfort to people sensitive to cows milk, and especially infants, which is why goat milk is frequently used in infant formula products. “Those benefits don’t stop at infants. There are benefits that can carry on throughout the various stages of life. We’re currently working with the High-Value Nutrition platform on a $1.4 million project looking at the attributes and benefits of goat milk for adult nutrition. Fat is the other attribute in goat milk and in dairy not all fats are the same. Cows tend to have a lot more long-chain fatty acids, which are harder to digest, and digested later in the gastric process. Goat milk is short to medium chain predominant and that makes it much faster in digestibility and creates more of an energy response as it’s processed, rather than stored.” Another benefit of goat milk starts right back at the farm gate, where Chris says there are a number of sustainability advantages. “Goat milk production results in 75% less methane and 95% less net carbon emission per kgMS than bovine milk, because of the nature of the ruminant. Goats are traditionally farmed in barns and there’s greater control of pasture and waterways access.” NIG Nutritionals employs 160 staff and has continued to operate throughout the pandemic as an essential business, with critical-worker status in more recent times. After successfully steering New Image Group through the challenges and changing environment brought about the Covid pandemic over the last two years, Chris has made the decision to take up a new position with Hydroxsys, a company that uses an innovative filtration system to recover wastewater, and who partners with NIG Nutritionals. Leon Fung, who has long history in the dairy industry, will assume the role as CEO of NIG Nutritionals later this month. “The decision to leave NIG wasn’t an easy one,” says Chris. “But it was the right time for a new and exciting challenge with another innovative company.” • from page 104 “Those benefits don’t stop at infants.
