Natalie Chrystal, animal nutrition consultant to AgriVantage says Launchpad18 is pure, unadulterated gold colostrum. “It is made from colostrum collected from the irst milking, is frozen on farm, transported, thawed, analysed for IgG (immunoglobulin) and nutrient content and dried. It contains no additives and it’s not manipulated. “The di erence between Launchpad18 and other colostrum replacers available in New Zealand is that Launchpad18 is a whole colostrum.” Colostrum plays a vital role in neonatal health; high quality maternal colostrum provides essential immunoglobulins, as well as about 90 functional components bene icial to life, including fats, proteins, carbohydrates, antibodies and immune factors, vitamins and minerals, growth factors and peptides, amongst others. Adequate intake of immunoglobulins within the irst 6 to 12 hours after birth helps to ensure that enough of these vital antibodies can enter the blood stream and protect the young animal from disease until it can mount its own immune response. “Containing 18% IgG, Launchpad18 not only provides a highly concentrated source of antibodies, it is also high in fat (minimum 18%), a vital fuel source for the newborn. “Considering the cold, wet weather conditions which most spring calves and lambs are born in, having a highly concentrated, highly digestible source of energy for these young animals is essential.” Importantly, as a whole colostrum, Launchpad18 is a rich source of non-nutritive factors such as natural hormones and antimicrobials (present in maternal colostrum) which help support development of the gut, the gastrointestinal tract microbial lora, post-natal growth and organ development. In contrast, to achieve high IgG concentrations in a colostrum replacer, ultra- iltration is common. This removes much of the fat present in the colostrum. And often removes the vital non-nutritive factors. “We think these non-nutritive factors are particularly important to optimising lifetime productivity of those calves, lambs or kids which aren’t able to consume su icient high quality maternal colostrum. “Being unadulterated means that Launchpad18 is not manipulated or ultra iltrated. High in both fat and IgG makes it the most balanced product on the market. “That’s why it’s also the best.” Newborn calves weighing about 40 kilograms should receive 100g of IgG within the irst 12 hours of life while newborn kids or lambs of about 4 kilograms should receive a minimum of 10g of IgG within the irst 12 hours of life.
