Russell Fredric Winton Stock Feed’s Southland business has grown considerably in the last two years due to its investment in a state-of-the-art blending plant and feed storage site at Winton. Technical Nutrition Specialist Brad Aitken says this facility is a one-of-a-kind operation. It uses an automated plant to provide blended dairy feeds with almost any additive made “straight on to the truck and delivered to your silo” which means there is one thing less farmers have to worry about. “It has never been so easy to include minerals in your silo blend.” “Over the last year a high percentage of our customers have taken advantage of the ability to add lime flour, magnesium and salt direct to their feed. This saves a significant amount of time and money compared to dusting your minerals on the paddock and we know that each cow gets their allocated requirement when feeding in the dairy shed.” However, macro minerals are only a small percentage of what WSF is able to offer, and an array of ingredients can be precisely measured and dosed. These include trace elements, monensin, biotin, organic minerals, phosphorous, gypsum, live yeast, rumen buffers, probiotics, and WSF’s Custom Mating Pack. “All of our mixes are customised for each client’s unique on-farm conditions to ensure a balanced diet for the cow to maximise performance and feed efficiency, technical nutrition specialist,” Brendon Corbett says. WSF sources grain from local farmers throughout the South Island to ensure quality and to provide the best possible milled products in conjunction with its feed mill, and has nutritional advice on-farm well covered. Brad and Brendon, who are the WSF technical team for the Southland/Otago Region, bring more than 40 years experience to the agricultural industry, and are well known as dairy nutrition experts in the south. With their extensive knowledge around feed and mineral supplementation, they are able to diagnose production, reproduction and animal health issues and provide research-based solutions to enhance farm profitability. “We are always keen for a discussion about nutrition requirements on-farm and can help get your cows on track,” Brad says. As well as dry dairy feeds in the Southland/Otago region, WSF are nationwide suppliers of molasses to the dairy industry. “With high rates of silage being fed around the country, adding molasses to the diet can help with fibre digestion and increase energy to the diet; combining this with extra protein is a winning formula to hold milk production and keep condition on cows,” Brendon says. “WSF have molasses available from seven different ports around New Zealand.
