They have owned and operated Advance Dairy and Pump for 13 years, managing it through some challenging times, including low dairy industry payouts, the Covid pandemic and now Cyclone Gabrielle. Based in Whangarei, Wellsford and Dargaville, and servicing everywhere from the Auckland Harbour Bridge north to Kawakawa, the company employs 22 staff, mostly working on-farm but with a small workshop and retail shop at each depot. The core of Advance Dairy and Pump’s work is the servicing and sales of milking plants, water reticulation and dairy effluent management systems for the rural industries, including cropping and sheep and cattle farms as well as dairy. Other key sectors the company services parts of include agricultural and civil contracting - the latter taking in road maintenance, landscaping, and plant and fertiliser spreading. “The work we do ranges from hydraulic hose repairs – these are in Wellsford only - to supplying buffalo milking plant, solar water pumping systems, whole-farm water filtration systems, dairy farm automation, water reticulation design and installation, and trenching,” Trevor says. The company boasts the De Laval milking machinery dealership, while Grundfos water pumps, Yardmaster effluent systems, Allflex, Milktech and Ryco hydraulics – the latter available in Wellsford only – are other top brands in its inventory. “We design systems, source, sell and service any type of water pump, all dairy farm milking and effluent equipment, water filters, tanks, pipe and fittings.” Of recent times solar water pumping has become more affordable and efficient, and Advance Dairy and Pump has lately installed some extensive systems, both surface and submersible. “This has provided good reliable drinking water for stock in places they’ve never had it before. “Staffing is a challenge to the dairy industry, but automation is assisting with options such as automatic cup-removers and automatic drafting gates,” Trevor says. “While not eliminating the farmer’s input, such innovations are reducing the time and labour involved, and can provide more accurate information.” The Whangarei team. On the dairy effluent side, there are still farmers who need to upgrade their systems before their consent to discharge to water runs out. Cyclone Gabriella created a new set of challenges.
