OTOBOSS has been the bedrock enabling enduring relationships to be built with customers over those five decades, but Schick Civil has also been about building the people within its business, says Siteworks Divisional Manager Daniel van der Hulst. “Many of our people have completed ten plus years’ service; one guy has just ticked over thirty years. So, it is definitely a long-term investment in people.” Across the country, including stand-alone branches in Christchurch and Nelson, Schick Civil fields a team of 250 staff, with about 180 of those based in its Te Rapa site in Hamilton. “We have guys with 30 – 40 years’ experience operating machines, and we take on a lot of graduates each year and bring them through the ranks, training them to be Contract Managers and then Divisional Managers. We’re very big on growing people and promoting internally, rather than hiring skills.” Schick Civil’s journey started in the Waikato, and in those days it was predominantly focused on building house pads, with some commercial works. Over the years the scope of work expanded but the leap came 25 years ago when the company was bought by its present owners who grew the business to undertake larger scale projects like Olam Food Ingredient’s new dairy processing plant in Tokoroa. The majority of Schick Civil’s work is in the Waikato; Coast to Coast from South Auckland to Taupo, with its core customer sectors including local government, private developers and dairy processors. Daniel doesn’t think there has been a dairy processor in the Waikato region that Schick Civil has not had some involvement with over the last 25 years. “We commenced the Olam Foods project about three years ago. It was a brownfield site that had been an old mill site. We were involved quite early on doing the initial site contamination investigations and project scoping. Following that we moved into the physical works doing site remediation, moving contaminated material to approved locations and encapsulating it. We went on to do a lot of ground improvements for the main building and various tanks, digging down, finding rock, sometimes taking the rock down, and sometimes bringing it up. We progressed into the drainage work and also dug trenches for the underground services, working with specialist providers who laid the pipes and cables. That progressed into roading, concrete surfacing and asphalt around the site, as well as final finishing of metal and concrete surfaces around buildings as they have been finished. We really enjoyed the opportunity to start a dairy factory from the ground up, and were extremely proud to work alongside Olam Foods to deliver their factory — OTOBOSS.” In March Schick Civil will formally celebrate its fiftieth-year milestone, with a guest list that includes past and present employees and their families, clients and other significant people attending a special concert event headlined by Christchurch rock band The Feelers. “I believe we’re catering for about 1200, so it really will be quite an amazing celebration,” says Daniel. A milestone year, good cause for celebration
