Karen Phelps In business for nearly 40 years, diverse agricultural contracting company Marsh Contracting in Te Puke has now been taken over by the second generation, with Tammy and Ben Brownless owning the business since mid-2024 and committed to continuing to provide the high quality workmanship, services, and products that Marsh Contracting has built its reputation on. Established by Jill and Neville Marsh when they were dairy farmers paying high interest rates in the mid-1980s, Marsh Contracting was the enterprising couple’s bid to supplement their income and was soon supporting the diversified requirement of agricultural and horticultural clients throughout the Bay of Plenty. Tammy has been part of Marsh Contracting for 17 years and says it’s all she’s ever known and what she grew up with. “It’s cool to be able to continue this legacy for my kids,” she says. “Especially my grandson who has a massive passion for tractors. He’s only two, but it’s great to see such passion at such a young age.” Ben’s previous time in farming has given him passion for the agricultural sector and enjoys being a part of the team out there doing it. “I just like being on a farm, especially our bigger farms, and all the gear is out. You smash out the day, you can either see bales wrapped in the paddock, or a good sized stack covered, and my boys have had a good day’s work .” Marsh Contracting utilises an expert team and a modern fleet of machinery to achieve its high standards and with the new generation, comes new technology. One of the first things Tammy and Ben did after taking over was to look at how they could improve efficiencies in both their team and their equipment. ”We’ve never really run GPS or auto steer for our maize planting, but once Tammy and I took over that was the first thing we put on one of our tractors,” Ben says. The couple also bought two new top-of-the-line Deutz-Fahr Warrior tractors which Ben says are super comfortable to operate with plenty of power and all the bells and whistles. Utilising Topcon Digi-Star software adds to the Deutz-Fahr Warrior’s increased operating efficiencies by reducing waste and optimising production. “We’ve got section control which gives proof of placement and less wastage of seed and fertiliser, which is what the farmers are wanting now” Ben says. “We can get the farmer’s job done efficiently then out the gate and off to the next one.” The legacy Ben and Tammy have to continue is one of support for Bay of Plenty farmers and growers, boosting the local economy, and ensuring food security for all. Supplying specialised machinery, precision farming technology, and skilled labour to efficiently complete on-farm tasks, Marsh Contracting allows farmers to focus on growing their crops and achieve optimum yields. Working for dairy, sheep and beef, and deer farmers, as well as a growing presence on kiwifruit and avocado orchards, Marsh Contracting is proud to play a crucial role in boosting the Bay of Plenty’s agriculture and horticulture sectors which are some of the region’s major employers. “We support them, they are the backbone of New Zealand.” Ella / Waikato & BOP 021 597 913 Scott / Taranaki & Central NI 027 586 2625 Whakatane 2 Mill Road, Coastlands 0800 77 88 99 Dan Benjamin 021 599 087 Peter Rust 027 634 3622 Proudly Supporting Marsh Contracting Tailored insurance to protect your business?
