Karen Phelps Edgecumbe based King Farm Services has just announced a new partnership with Bovonic to bring innovative mastitis detection technology to dairy farmers across the Bay of Plenty region. “It’s very exciting stuff,” says Steve King, who has led the family-owned business since its establishment in 1988. “It’s incredibly affordable, around $500 a unit. It’s a very visual system and is cost effective to run. It’s fully guaranteed and we’ve already done our first installation. There has been a lot of interest.” Bovonic’s QuadSense system is designed and manufactured in New Zealand and uses patented milk sensors and advanced detection algorithms to identify mastitis in its earliest stages, including both clinical and subclinical cases. Steve says that what makes the system particularly attractive to farmers is its ease of implementation. The technology integrates seamlessly into existing dairy operations through a universal design that allows for self-installation. Four patented milk sensors are inserted into the liners of milking cups, connected to a control unit containing the system’s intelligence, replaceable batteries, an acknowledgement button and a 360-degree alert light. The system starts measuring milk as soon as cups are placed on the cow and delivers results after just one minute, with a red-light alert when mastitis is present. Steve says the benefits for farmers are substantial. The system means a reduction in labour-intensive tasks such as herd stripping or California Mastitis Tests. By detecting mastitis early the system can potentially save farmers significant money through reduced antibiotic use, lower cow culling rates, greater milk production and lower somatic cell counts leading to higher payouts.
