Jackson’s journey into agricultural contracting began at a young age. He has been driving tractors since age 16 and now 28, his experience spans more than a decade, including a stint in tractor sales before seizing the opportunity to buy into an existing contracting business. “The founder was a dairy farmer and he wasn’t heavily involved in the contracting business,” Jackson says. “When the chance came up, I took it, left my sales job, and took on Forbes Agri full-time.” While Forbes Agri offers a range of services, muck spreading has become a standout focus. “It’s has played a really big part in our growth,” Jackson says. “Some contractors do it, but not everyone wants to because, quite frankly, it’s dealing with manure. But there was a gap in the market, and we stepped up to fill it. It took off quickly for us.” Forbes Agri’s muck spreading service ensures farmers get timely assistance, a key advantage over larger operations that often struggle with scheduling. “When a farmer calls, we get the job done within the week, and usually on the exact day they prefer. That reliability keeps us growing year after year.” Another pivotal moment in the Forbes Agri’s early growth was acquiring an established baling run. This really helped to accelerate growth with a strong established client base and set the company up for further expansion into baling. Beyond baling and muck spreading, Forbes Agri has significantly expanded its tip trailer operations. “We’ve always done tip trailer work, but we’re increasing our capacity,” Jackson says. “We now have two trailers of our own and the ability to bring in extra units when needed, supplying farmers and other contractors with up to five tip trailers at a time.” This year, Forbes Agri introduced an 18-ton trailer to complement its existing 15-ton unit, and Jackson has plans for further upgrades. “Bigger trailers mean we can transport more and complete jobs faster. We’re definitely still in growth mode. Every year, it gets busier.” Despite a challenging start to the season due to prolonged poor spring weather, Forbes Agri continues to thrive. Forbes Agri offers a wide range of services. “It was tough for everyone, but we adapted and kept things moving.” Seasonality plays a role in operations, with baling a core summer activity and muck spreading and tip trailer work continuing year-round. “Baling gives the team a change of pace in the summer and the rest of our work keeps us busy throughout the year.” As Forbes Agri continues to expand, its commitment to timely service and quality workmanship remains at the heart of its success. “As long as we do a good job and get it done when the farmer wants it done, they are pretty happy. That’s why we keep getting busier and busier every year.” Hardegger Ag Ltd is a committed agricultural contracting business.
