There are also parts of it where the tractor can’t go. I’ve been putting a lot of time into trying to make it a showpiece that I’m used to. “One of my goals here is the challenge. My last farm was very flat, so I’m here to earn my stripes. The icing on the cake is that I’m working for my Iwi and helping to develop these young people.” Capital works and future-proofing Anthony has been involved in a number of capital developments on corporate farms. It’s been valuable intel for the Trust. They are two 50m x 10m effluent bunkers to future-proof the property. They used to have a 40- day effluent storage capacity and Anthony laughs that when the “monsoon season” came it was constantly being tested. That challenge for their compliance was hanging over their heads. The new works (which will increase the size of the lined effluent pond from 35m x 35m to 55m x 55m) will give Anthony an option to irrigate one- third of the farm for 240-days of the year. They are also contouring some of the forestry development to make the property easier to manage. A Halo weather station with a moisture probe adds another level of certainty regarding the opti- mum times to irrigate. “We just making sure that we’re compliment for the next 15 to 20 years,” he said. “I call it ‘looping the ‘p’s’, because that’s what you do after dotting the ‘i’s and crossing the ‘t’s”. He says he has much to thank the dairy industry for and he encourages young people to consider what it could bring to their life. “It has provided for us and given us the lifestyle we have. It’s also given my kids opportunity. I couldn’t have got any of this done without Danelle and the support of my immediate and extended family.” Anthony Kiff is contract milking the 230-hectare (effective) Tauhara North No. 2 Trust dairy. Dairy farming has allowed Anthony and Danelle to give their children Zavier, 9, Ahlia, 11, and Shila 14, exciting opportunities.
